Meet Jeremiah Baker of Normal Objects in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Baker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeremiah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I seek to irreverently blur the lines between design, fashion, art, gender and I’m a formally trained Industrial Designer with 10+ years of professional product design experience, having both developed/shipped successful products with the worlds leading brands (Samsung, Panasonic, Kswiss, Google…to name a few).

I left the comfort of corporate nine-to-five design because I was disenchanted with complex technology being considered a more valuable contribution to the human experience than the simple human objects we interact with every day and resolved to elevate the value of everyday things.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all. I’ve definitely had to learn some things the hard way. Call it, trial by fire or just a willingness to jump into this fueled by passion with no mentorship. It meant having to be prepared to work through whatever may come. I’ve had to persevere through self-doubt, failures, and fatigue in juggling a full-time job and developing a lifestyle goods brand simultaneously.

We’ve had our ideas knocked off by bigger brands, leaving us sitting on inventory we can’t move. I’ve had partners steal money. I’ve had vendors stop work without explanation after being paid and we’ve had PR scams rob us blind. The usual woe’s common with entrepreneur tenacity.

Overall, I’d say the biggest challenge we’ve had to work through and still constantly face is keeping a unique POV amongst all of the noise.

In an age of social media and information overload, the biggest obstacle is reaching and remaining visible to your tribe. Crafting a method to cut through the noise and connect with the people you are trying to reach.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Normal Objects story. Tell us more about the business.
We curate limited collections that are not fast fashion or governed by trends, treating each object as its own endeavor. We challenge the convention of premium value by elevating the most common objects for all.

Offering a classic minimalist aesthetic, remixed for alternative styles with an emphasis on quality. Our pieces are meant to last. We’re keen on considered design and unexpected executions. Transforming everyday items into sophisticated pieces that are classically un-classic and uncommon in a quiet way that still commands attention.

Made + designed in Los Angeles.

Unisex/ For humans, not genders.

Limited/ To preserve quality and prevent waste. Our collections are extremely limited. Some items may never be reproduced.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry (fashion accessories x lifestyle) goods becoming a level playing field. Increasingly, people will have the capacity to create goods and the respective direct channels to get those goods anywhere/anyone in the world.

As a collective, we’re also becoming increasingly aware of the fragility of our planet and it will be crucial for brands/humanity to think long term with how their creations impact the health of both humanity and the planet.

Resulting in, a fundamental shift in how we experience things and make purchasing decisions.

I also see mediums blending with beautiful seems. Technology, art, and function will manifest in new beautiful hybrids that don’t feel overly any of those three things. Objects and experiences will blend. Things will get more transparent and authentic out of necessity.
