Today we’d like to introduce you to John Storie.
John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m from Oregon and moved to LA to attend USC in 2002. I’ve been a musician my whole life, and my dream through college was to live in Los Angeles and thrive in our amazing music scene. Over the years, I’ve been active in the jazz scene, performing at many area venues while also maintaining a busy touring schedule with several bands. Currently, I’m working with actor Jeff Goldblum in the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra – a six-piece jazz ensemble. We’re headed to Europe this week to promote our new album on Decca Records! I love living in Los Angeles and I feel fortunate to have a wonderful community of fellow musicians, as well as students and other clients I work with on a weekly basis.
Has it been a smooth road?
The struggles have been to maintain the balance between pursuing art as a musician and staying afloat by working a variety of gigs. There have been many times where I’ve pursued projects which ended up going nowhere, and the economics of pursuing creative projects always is tricky in today’s music industry.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a jazz guitarist – I perform in the jazz scene, as well as teach at Pierce College along with private lessons. I’m known mostly for my work with Jeff Goldblum, but I also have had recognition with Gwen Stefani and other pop artists. I’ve also performed for 15 years with my trio the New West Guitar Group. Being a committed straight-ahead jazz guitarist sets me apart from other guitar players, in that its a rare for guitarists to specialize in this style of music.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Huge shifts in how music is delivered to listeners, as well as the live concert experience.
