Meet Trailblazer Jessy Chang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Chang.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hi! I started Local High Society in 2017 when California legalized recreational marijuana use, so I can share my two favorite things to do together: smoke weed and do yoga!

I’ve been practicing yoga for about seven years and teaching for about three years. I have always felt so in tune with my breath, with my body, able to shift my awareness and focus my mind when I smoke weed before my yoga practice. I thought I can’t be the only person who loves this combination! Surely, when I started to tell my students that I practice and teach stoned yoga, many of them would tell me that they always get stoned before coming to my class anyways! This inspired me to start a community, to provide a safe space for yogis who love to smoke weed to come together, share smokes and practice yoga without feeling ashamed, being judged, or criticized.

We meet once a month mostly in DTLA at my home studio Evoke Yoga. I try to offer different types of yoga or sound bath, so each month has a different theme. Our most popular classes are anything with the Sound Bath, either with or without Yin Yoga. A new favorite is our Stoned Hip Hop Yoga with DJ LaBellatini!

My goal is to inspire my students to love and honor their mind/body and uplift their spirit through the explorations and evolutions of their conscious minds.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge is the limited time I have to organize our monthly event. Because I work full time as a graphic designer and teach about 7-8 classes a week, time is very limited for me to design the flyer, to promote, reach out to sponsors… etc. So, every Local High Society event is made from love and dedication.

My one advice for young women. especially yoga teachers, just starting their journey is… if there’s something you love and you want to share with the rest of the world, just put yourself out there. You have nothing to lose! People who love you and love what you do will keep coming back to you!

We’d love to hear more about Local High Society.
Local High Society offers a Higher Yoga Experience and a Higher Sound Healing Experience. We focus primarily on relaxation and healing of the body and mind.

The moment I realized how important cannabis + yoga was when students tell me how much better they feel in their body and mind afterwards. With the right strain of cannabis, it can really help you soften and relax those tight muscles!

There has been a growing movement in Los Angeles to offer cannabis enhanced yoga, but we’re the first to offer cannabis enhanced Reiki Sound Bath, Yin/Restorative Yoga + Sound Bath, and Stoned Hip Hop Yoga with live DJ. We also had a Stoned Glow in the Dark Buti Yoga in the past… and that was super fun! So, besides our signature Yin Yoga + Sound Bath, we alternate our monthly event with something different, something fun.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Since I started to teach cannabis enhanced yoga, I have noticed that the cannabis wellness industry is predominately women! It makes sense. The cannabis plants which produce the flower for us to smoke are female plants, and cannabis-induced high evokes feminine energy.

I believe there are plenty of opportunities out there for both women and men, as long as you have the talent the skills to do what you need to do! I believe anything men can do, women can as well, if not better.
