Today we’d like to introduce you to Kash Hovey.
Kash, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in LA I always wanted to make movies and be in the entertainment industry. My earliest memories were watching films, drawing, making costumes and creating characters. I always felt the most alive when I was performing. When I was ten, I used my dad’s camcorder and began to write, direct and act in scenes with my friends. I got involved in school plays, took acting classes and participated in a showcase that led to getting an agent when I was 15. My mom would take me to auditions after school and I got an early insight into the process. I remember going in for a big studio movie, getting a callback, the filmmakers wanted to hire me, and then finding out they went with another actor who was over 18 who could play younger. I continued to study my craft. I attended workshops and took classes at Ivanna Chubbuck Studio. My mom was always encouraging me to go after my dreams and was so supportive.
When I was 17, I went to audition for a Secret Deodorant Commercial that Joe Pytka was directing. Afterward, I went to take my last final exam and then received a call that I had booked the role. I was finished with high school and the next day I was on set. That moment in time was such an accomplishment for me to close one chapter of my life and move onto the next.
I attended Cal State Northridge and continued to audition and work during college. After I graduated, I went right to work. I’ve had the honor of collaborating and developing content with some incredible artists. I’m very proud of the films I’ve been involved in and the talent I’ve been fortunate to work with.
Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that accomplishing anything worthwhile takes hard work and persistence. It’s been a long and adventurous journey for me. It definitely hasn’t been easy but the challenges I have been presented with taught me to overcome obstacles. It took 2 years of auditioning before I booked my first role and then after I worked various jobs inside and outside of the industry, go to college and occasionally booking acting or modeling jobs. School did not come easy for me and I had to work hard to graduate. My work experience definitely taught me discipline and focus. Even after I book a role or finish a production, challenges can still come up that you have to deal with to get your project finished and released.
Five years ago I was offered the lead role in a movie titled “Jack and Cocaine” which was done with a very limited crew and budget that I ended up becoming a producer on. I was attending local film festivals in LA and supporting films that my friends and colleagues were involved in. This is when I was noticing the power of social media and began to learn about marketing and promotion. We released the finished film on Vimeo and began to gain a following. Eventually, I found a festival that was interested and gave us a screening. That was another moment where I felt an accomplishment after so much time had passed to have an official premiere and properly acknowledge our film and team.
Obstacles always come up and nothing is certain, I go through it daily. I always expect the unexpected and I’m ready for whatever the day throws at me. You have to be ready to wear different hats to see it through a project’s completion. When something doesn’t work, it opens an opportunity for a better solution.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As an actor/producer I’m always looking for fascinating projects to get involved in and inspirational people to collaborate with who share my passion. A film I acted in titled “Undateable John” was released on October 4th of this year. My character’s name is Adam and I play opposite Shannen Doherty. The film had an amazing cast featuring Joan Jett, Daryl Hannah, Tom Arnold, Ron Robinson, Estella Warren and Margaret Cho. It was a very fun experience and I’m honored to be part of the movie.
A short film I’m in with Shari Belafonte titled “Plastic Paydream” directed by Kathy Kolla is airing nationwide on ShortsTV Network on October 28th. Kathy and I teamed up again over the summer for her new series “Mayhem of the Mind.” The first episode tilted “The Chiseled-Faced Man” will premiere at Film Fest LA Live during a film block I’m hosting on November 9th. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many talented artists that I respect and admire. I’m so proud of the work we have created and will continue to produce and develop.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I Love LA! I was born and raised here, I couldn’t live anywhere else. I love connecting with creative people and the opportunities that are available. The fast-paced energy (Which I love also) can be a bit much without a balance so I find it important to take breaks, go on trips, and experience life.
