Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Toubian.
Aaron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started to stutter at the age of four when I had a traumatic accident. It came after when I suddenly lost my balance and fell into the pool not knowing how to swim. I was blessed with help of a speech-language pathologist who’s method changed my life alongside with the support of my family.
The journey has been a lot of things and definitely not an easy one to say the least. Through my own experience, I’ve come to learn that it’s not just about the stammer; you are robbed of your voice — and when you are not heard, you are not seen. This has been known to start affecting day-to-day life, self-esteem and self-love. It becomes difficult to find your place in the world. Many people who stutter struggle with shame — their confidence is low, making it challenging to do things such as going on a job interview, asking someone out on a date, ordering take out, or even feeling confident in making friends. That is where I come in. I combine the methods I have learned in overcoming my stutter along with tools to help with the shame and overall confidence. It is my goal to help you live the life you deserve to live using the voice you deserve to love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. When I was younger with my stutter, I wasn’t able to say my own name when introducing myself to people, I would have people finish my sentences for me, I couldn’t order food at restaurants, I would have trouble talking on the phone. It took me a very long time to accept my stutter. One day I was out to lunch with my sister 5 years ago, when she asked me: how badly do I want it? Referring to how badly do I want to control/overcome my stutter. After she asked me that question, my mind set started to change and I started to take my stuttering more seriously.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Stuttering coach – what should we know?
I’m a stuttering coach who helps serve people who stutter. I started this business eight months ago and I absolutely love what I do. I’m most proud of helping/coaching people who stutter and I’ve seen a lot of growth from my clients that I have. What sets me apart from others is I can relate to my clients because I’ve dealt with stuttering as well, so I tell my clients about my own journey with stuttering.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, my family deserves credit for believing in me and cheering me on. If it wasn’t for them supporting my passion, I wouldn’t have done this coaching business. The second person is my old speech pathologist Vivian Sheehan. She was the one who really helped me with my stutter and teaching me a method that helped me with my stutter. Now I teach the method she taught me with my clients.
My therapist Bernard Douglas and life coach Ashton Cantou. They both helped me with my self confidence, limiting beliefs and just believing in myself.
