Meet Taylur Avery of Mayweather Boxing + Fitness in Torrance and South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylur Avery.

Taylur, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I’ve been in Law Enforcement now for about five years. I am a federal agent now, but I started out as a State Trooper in Laurel, MS. With my training, we had very detailed and extensive training in the Mixed Martial Arts to include boxing. We had fight nights, where we had to box each other for rounds and time. And I fell in love with boxing from there. When I switched from state to federal law enforcement and moved to Los Angeles, I found a personal boxing coach who lived in my apartments. His name is Nasser. He kept my skills sharp.

I was interested in franchising at the time but wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the food or fitness industry. And one day, as I am scrolling Instagram, I see a sponsored post, promoting the grand opening of a Mayweather Boxing gym in LA. So, I clicked the link thinking it would be a cool gym to train at, then I saw that they were franchising. So, I inquired and got a call back almost immediately! After a few short meetings and a Discovery Day, I became the youngest and one of the first-ever franchisees of a Mayweather Boxing + Fitness gym. And now, here I am. About three weeks from my official gym opening!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Nothing great comes easy. Dealing with the city is a struggle in and of itself! It takes some time to find a location and get a lease signed, but the corporate team was very supportive in that aspect. I’ve faced many challenges that I could go on days about. Learning to be a boss and having employees was brand new to me. I’m a natural-born leader, so I never struggled to lead. However, learning to lead in a way that is both rewarding for my team, yet keeping a high standard for performance was a challenge.

Please tell us about Mayweather Boxing + Fitness.
I am the sole owner of the Mayweather Boxing + Fitness studio in Torrance, CA. The name speaks for itself, we specialize in boxing and fitness! We have three different types of classes, 45 minutes each, composed of a warm-up, boxing/heavy bag work, HIIT/strength training, and abs! No one workout is ever the same! And we pride ourselves on that. This is NOT a boxing gym, it’s a boxing and fitness gym. It is for all ages and all backgrounds. And every individual regardless of boxing experience will absolutely get a great workout.

Specifically for Torrance, we are proud to be a family, where we encourage our members to use our facility as an outlet, a place to call home. We are set apart from others because no other boxing gym can say that they have the boxing secrets from the greatest fighter of all time, Floyd Mayweather. Our training program and boxing combinations are developed specifically from Floyd’s training regimens and no other gym can imitate that.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is my first time going out of the country to Germany on a People to People Sports Ambassadors trip to play volleyball in the “junior Olympics.” An amazing experience that wouldn’t have been possible without my grandmother. It’s the reason why I love to travel so much.
