Today we’d like to introduce you to ORC.
ORC, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is ORC and I’m an LA-based producer out of South Central. As far as I can remember, music was in every aspect of my life. My father would often bring me to various studio sessions to Warner Bros and Universal as a kid, as well as having me inside the studio when he would record. Growing up, I’d have music playing in my headphones that would vary from the Definite Jux label, Jimi Hendrix, RJD2, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Ras G, Pink Floyd, Rage Against The Machine, and various other sounds on blast throughout every day to block out everything externally. All I cared about was the music playing and how they got the sound I loved. I once never had ambitions of making music I just wanted to skate and one day sate professionally. But that changed once my friend’s Dad had me a play a simple bass line of a metal song that later leads to me receiving that same bass guitar months later for my 13th birthday. Once I got my hands on it, I’d eventually start learning songs by ear from start to finish. On days when I couldn’t skate, I’d play bass it would take over my time completely. Eventually, I moved out East to go stay with my Father and my Mom had never sent my bass to me. To solve that problem, my Dad built me a desktop and gave me a copy of Reason 4 for my 16th birthday and I remember immediately getting lost in the software. The songs weren’t that great at first, and my Dad would in my room to later tell me to start turning instruments down (laughs). From that, I’d later learn how to mix down my own songs and eventually start making full tracks.
Can you give our readers some background on your music? What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
For me, my sound is about expressing myself as free as I possibly can. What I mean by that is if I can make a sound bleed I’ll push it to its limit and see if it fits in the track. If I can… great. If not, then I’ll move on to the next sound. My sound is about freedom, just letting things flow and somehow finding its way back home. You may get lost for a little while but it always finds its way back home and to me, that’s all that matters. I want the listener to not feel like they can predict what’s gonna happen next, I want them to go on the ride and choose their meaning with my tracks.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
The biggest challenge facing artists today is keeping your integrity and authenticity throughout all the saturation of gimmicks that currently flood the industry without feeling the need to follow just them to sustain your career. There’s a lot of pressure to appear cool and be accepted as an artist when in reality we all just want to create to our heart’s content and to be able to monetize from it without the headache of feeling we’re not cool enough or don’t look the part to be an artist. I feel that there’s so much judgment on the external to where we forget about the actual work itself and how that affects us. There’s so much that consumes our mind already that we often lose sight as to why we create in the first place.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can find my work on Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, and SoundCloud. All platforms.
