Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Johnson.
Matt, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After years of being a fan of podcasts and true crime documentaries, I decided to buy a microphone, Mac, mixer and give it a shot myself.
My podcast is told from a unique perspective because I was there in most cases witnessing the events unfold. I like to tell the story of the crime, how I was assigned the case and include new interviews with the victims and their families to see how they are doing today.
So I dusted off my reporter notebooks and decided to revisit the cases that I have covered, followed and have haunted me the most during my career as a TV journalist.
Cases include the Mysterious death of Rebecca Zahau in San Diego, the disappearance of Portland second-grader Kyron Horman, the Turpin’s House of Horrors Trial in Riverside County and my interview with Ted Bundy Chi Omega sorority attack survivor Kathy Kleiner.
Overnight the podcast was a success. Regularly making the Apple Podcast charts in True Crime genre and Person Journals. This past year I was also nominated for a ‘People’s Choice Podcast Award’ and have been asked to be a featured speaker and podcast host at the upcoming American Crime Fest.
I am excited to shed more light on these cases and remind the impacted families that they and their loved ones are not forgotten.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The cases are burned in my mind so the storytelling part is simple. What can sometimes be a challenge is a technology.
What else should we know? What sets you apart from others?
My connection to the cases, ability to gain access to police records and get exclusive interviews with key players involved sets my podcast apart from others in the True Crime space.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I think my mom has always been my biggest cheerleader throughout my career.
It was so special to bring her as my date at these years EMMY awards ceremony where I was honored with an EMMY for my Crime reporting in Los Angeles. I dedicated my award to her during my speech.
