Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Lyon.
Black Lyon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The four of us went to the same college but ironically enough we were not close friends back then. A couple of us had the same classes together and that was it. We were competitors; fighters. Just kidding. Anyway. Later on, after moving to LA and grabbing coffee a couple of times, we decided to put together this band. We started working on our first song “Down Down” last year, we shared online dating disappointments and successes, we overdosed on coffee, and here we are today! Working on more songs and getting ready to go out and put on a fun show.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing good comes in the shape of a smooth road. There have been struggles individually for the four of us and even collectively – did we mention online dating? – So, yes, we don’t always agree on everything but we’re learning to listen to each other and appreciate how much value and great ideas we all bring to this band. We’re all very different, and we all come from very different cultures. It’s amazing how much we can learn and connect through music. Also, at times staging our vision demands money, so we have to find creative ways in which it does not become a barrier. Or we can sell lemonade. Anyone wants a lemonade?
Tell us more about your band.
Black Lyon is a dark pop band and we’re all from four different corners of the world. We speak seven languages in total together, so our brains are usually very confused. We do not specialize in languages though, – we know, bummer – we do music that hopefully will connect with people and make them feel something through the sounds for a second. We have Barbara Schucko (Voice/Bass) from Brazil, Ece Muniroglu (Pianos/Background Vocals) from Turkey, Alex Mor (Voice/Guitars) from Venezuela and Bas Janssen (Drums) from the Netherlands. The main idea was to use our music to put uncomfortable emotions and ideas in the spotlight, simply to show people that even uncomfortable emotions are as important as the pleasant ones.
We are proud of our sound since we mix elements from pop, trap and film scoring. It’s a dramatic sound that encompasses a lot of things we like musically. We think that what sets us apart is both our sound and what we all bring to the table being from four different cultures.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Plenty of people. Our parents, friends, and people who listen to our music are always first. Our teachers, who gave us all the tools we needed for this journey, to our mind comes Joe Carrier, Claudio Ragazzi, Arturo Silva, Prince Charles Alexander and plenty more. Our mixing engineer Sohta and our mastering engineer Michelle. Our friend Gara who’s been our photographer. Santiago Fierro and his team that directed our first music video “This Way” were amazing and helped us a lot with our vision.
We also want to thank our friends from El Feeling and Migrant Motel who are always giving us solid advice and input. The siblings Beatriz and Gabriel Bustamante who are currently working with us on our next music video. Tata and Hilary from LBM in Venezuela who’ve been very supportive in the area of PR. All the people of Highroad Publicity who were also really helpful to us. Joselin Galarza, who designed our official logo, and David Valera who is currently designing some stuff for our future videos. Stefanie Schaefer, designer of our cover arts. It takes a lot of people to put creative work together and we are extremely grateful to have this talented bunch alongside us!
