Meet Ad Sachan of Treeline Wood and Metalworks in Frogtown and Elysian Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ad Sachan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ad. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started Treeline, as a family endeavor, after I got laid off from a non-profit outfit I was working with in downtown LA. I had always enjoyed making and dissecting things growing up so I thought this would be as good of a time as any to try my hand at it.

We wanted to do it the right way and do it well. We found the investment for the space, the equipment, the material, and jumped right in it. I never expected anything from it but a friend of mine told me that the business will teach me what to do. That rings true every single day. I don’t think there are any secrets in what we are doing — all the skills, the machines and the material has been around for a very long time or can be learned. If there is any trick to it, it’s to be able to stick around long enough to let people find you. We are blessed to be on this adventure and if it wasn’t this I’m sure I’d be doing something equally exciting.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anyone can say that a running a business is a smooth road. Every day comes with its own set of fascinating (or not so fascinating!) problems and you’re job is to solve them as soon as they come and keep at it.

Early on when we were starting out we knowingly took a lot of projects at a loss just to be able to create a portfolio so others can get a glimpse of what we are capable of. Those were always tricky times. Times when we are slow is also challenging. We had to make sure we took (and continue to) care of our own, e.g., our employees who have stuck with us through all these years, before anything else. I’d say that that is probably a company’s first priority.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a custom wood and metal fabrication shop that specializes in working with reclaimed woods. We have a reclaimed lumber yard open to the public and offer various services — CNC, Laser, sanding, custom milling — as well. I always say that we can do as much or as little as people like.

And I’m proud of the only reason we can do what we do — our people. Almost all of our employees have stuck with us over years since we started and I think that says a lot about our commitment to each other. I think that is a rare thing to find these days. As for what sets us apart from others, I’d have to repeat that there are no secrets to what we are doing. If there is any trick to it, it would be that we strive to do things well and as we promised we would.

What were you like growing up?
My first thought is to laugh at this question. You could have found me buried in a book sitting by myself somewhere, most likely the roof of my parent’s house. Through middle school, I thought myself sub-atomic and astro-physics just because I was curious. Through high school, I decided I’d like to build my own plane and fly it so I went to college for aerospace engineering. Through my time in college, I pursued opportunities to back my childhood ideas and ideals about animal and human rights with action. Every lifetime, and they do feel like different lifetimes, came with their own set of lessons and each led seamlessly to the next.

At the end, I have to say that my parents are some of the most forgiving and patient people!
