Today we’d like to introduce you to Etienne Green.
Etienne, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Hip Hop Artist by the name of KABWASA. I first started making music at a very young age, discovering a passion for creating and writing songs. Throughout high school, I spent my free time making songs to post on youtube and SoundCloud and performing in talent shows. Once I arrived at USC for college, I began to take my music career a bit more seriously.
I paired up with a few other creatives at the university and we began to create music together that we would eventually have the opportunity to put on all platforms. Through these connections, I was able to meet my manager Jason Porter and since then we have been working together to continue to bring this music career into reality. We to this day are focused on continuing to grow and develop with each new song or project we release.
Awesome to hear how USC was kind of a catalyst in getting your career going. You’re still in the early stages, but so far has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges along the way. The biggest challenge in pursuing an independent music career from the bottom up would be patience and confidence. When we first started this journey, there were very few people who cared to listen to the music we were making. It is difficult to continue to push and develop your music when it feels like no one cares. But that the key. To continue to work until people start to notice. There’s no easy or fast way into becoming a prominent artist. No short cuts. The only path is straight ahead.
So the most important thing and also the most challenging thing is to continue to remind yourself that your time will come as long as you keep pushing. Doing shows with only a few people in the crowd, releasing songs where only 20 people listen on the first day, these are things you have to get through and move past in order to grow. Not letting this discourage you or stop you from growing and pushing is the key.
What else should we know?
I am an independent Hip Hop artist. But I try to not let my music be bound by its genre. I think this is what I’m most proud of. I think my music generally creates a vibe for everyone. Whatever type of music you enjoy the odds are I probably have a song in my discography for you. I feel like this is what sets my music apart.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child, I grew up in a very creative household. I remember when we were bored my siblings and I used to get on the desktop and make a song on Garageband and then continue on to make a music video for the song. This was always my favorite thing to do and I guess it really stuck with me. I’m basically still doing it to this day.
