Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyx Romero.
Alyx, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was 12 years old I visited family from my father’s side in Yucatán. My tia Pati was one of the person’s to inspire me to pick up a camera, she would always carry her DSLR with her everywhere she went.
During that time I was dealing with a lot of depression. I found that photography was my light and what showed me purpose in life, which is what has kept me doing it since. I want others to see what my eyes see, and the beauty that there is around us if we just took the moment to stop and appreciate daily things.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles that I have faced is having some family not be supportive of pursuing photography as a career since I was young, and that affected my mental health severely because I felt like my passion was something that I couldn’t fulfill.
Some challenges that I have dealt with are getting my work out there as well a financial funds to produce my work.
I also feel like for womxn of color it is harder to feel represented or seen. Also being someone who is very outspoken about activism and political views I feel like some folks in the art world want us to censor or separate our art from our political views and activism and that’s also been challenging, but empowering at the same time.
Tell us more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc.
I started my Instagram account sometime in 2012, I used to have about 2,000 something photos, but then deleted a lot of them since I decided to be a little more intentional about the photos I posted on my account. I mostly focus on taking nature shots as well as street photography. A lot of the folks that follow me often tell me they enjoy the colors I bring out in my photos. Some people will often ask me what camera I used to shoot and most of the time my response is that I took it with my iPhone.
I think somethings that have made me stand out are my Instagram username, “tiny avocado.” I don’t remember how or who started it but someone started calling me “Tiny” or some “Avocado” haha so it kind of stuck to the point where people have approached me asking if I’m, “Tiny” or some folks don’t know my is Alyx they have thought it’s another person. So my username definitely has become a part of who I am and what I’m known for as far as my photography.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Looking forward to creating more and having more of my work in art galleries. I’m hoping to one day be able to figure out coming out with a short book of my work.
I am also looking to do more portraits of people as well as working with doing more self-portraits.
I’m selling some of my work through Society6, but I am looking forward to selling more of my work through my own site one day.
