Meet Ludmila Tomashevskay of Ludmila Couture in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ludmila Tomashevskay.

Ludmila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a student at the sewing technology school in Moldova, I could have never imagined I would one day be living in Los Angeles, working with the some of the most successful internationally recognized celebrities. After graduation, I helped create new collections at Chisinau House of Couture in Moldova. It was interesting work, but life was very hard in the USSR, and I decided the best decision for my young son’s future, was to move to Israel. Shortly after arriving to Israel, I started working at Gotex- the World leading manufacturer of women’s swimwear. But my journey wasn’t done. I learned a lot at Gotex about details and stretch materials- information I carried with me when I immigrated to the United States. In America, we faced lots of hardship, financial and emotional, dealing with our new lives as immigrants. The first big investment, of course, was a sewing machine, which became a “bread earner”. It all started in my 1 bedroom apartment. Sewing machine was mounted in bedrooms closet……. To survive, I worked day and night. After a full day’s work at the tailor shop, I went home and kept working until 4 o’clock in the morning.

The formal beginning of Ludmila Couture came after I started designing and making wedding dresses. My name was getting around and my hands stayed very busy. After a while, I was told by so many of my friends I have to get out of my house and establish my own business. In February 2001 I finally found a space for my business (that was not my bedrooms closet!). Two of my best friends took all the financial responsibilities and helped me with all set ups. I was no longer just a tailor, I was now a business owner.

All my existing clients helped out a lot in spreading the word out about me. So, one day I ended up working for Ozzy Osborne show, where I met a stylist Simone Harouche with whom I was invited to work for Christina Aguilera. My life became a roller coaster, I met a lot of different stylists. Word got around, and I started working for Hanna Montana Show. I created a lot of custom designs and performed alterations for Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus and Kardashians

With time, I established a very reliable team, who support me in all the various projects we take on at Ludmila Couture. So, from then on I was able to travel to private fittings to celebrities’ houses and work on sets. I met a lot of interesting people who inspired my creative side. Many people can sew, but not many can do good alterations. Every single garment we work on gives us more experience. One of my clients said to me recently, when I am pinning garments to be altered, that I look like a musician. We are people all created differently and my job is to make sure garment fits each body as music notes on paper in a composition that is beautiful and elegant. It is greatest pleasure of all to see my clients leave my studio happy with our work. We work closely on regular basis with Kardashian family, Miley Cyrus, Lily Collins, Matt Damon, Nicole Richie, Tracee Ross, Bebe Rexha, Jessie J, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Emmy Rossum, Christina Aguilera, Alexander McQueen Store, LoHo Bride Boutique, Reformation Store. And …….10 years later I still work with Simone Harouche and Chrisitina, Miley…

Has it been a smooth road?
After I came to Los Angeles and began to work in the fashion industry, I started doing various custom jobs for celebrity clients

Many little girls grow up dressing their dolls, creating garments adorned with frills and lace, living in the world of fantasy and make-believe. But fantasy became a reality for Ludmila Tomashevskay, the owner of Ludmila Couture. She went from dressing up her dolls to designing clothes for divas.

While growing up in Chisinau, Moldova, Ludmila has acquired a great passion for fashion and design. As a little girl, she designed clothing for dolls, sewing each outfit by hand. “I used to sew by hand when I was a kid since I didn’t have a sewing machine”- recalls Ludmila. “I started designing clothes for my own dolls, and soon after that I was dressing all the dolls in the neighborhood”.

At the age of 12 Ludmila got her first sewing machine and began making clothes for herself and her friends.
