Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Hernandez.
Jose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Deathcamp began with a group of friends in 2009 in the city of Compton. It all started when my friends found out that I had purchased my first home and decided to come pay me a visit to congratulate me on my accomplishment. It was a weekend night like any other with lots of alcohol, weed smoke, lots of laughing and remembering the good old days. After one night it became a weekend thing of us hanging out listening to music and partying to the next day.
Since I was single and living alone I would always opened my home to my guest to stay the night over so they wouldn’t have to drive home intoxicated and have to worry about anything. Waking up hungover and feeling like crap or “death” and having friends crash out all over my living room floor it began to start looking like a “Camp” ground with everyone sleeping in sleeping bags or just passed out with a blanket on their face and that’s how I slowly began to call it “DeathCamp” for shits and giggles.
Calling it Deathcamp it began to catch on because of the reputation it had when I would have parties or kickbacks at my house. Gaining popularity amongst ourselves and friends we began to invite our closest friends who invited their friends and so on and so on to enjoy my empty garage and huge driveway with plenty of parking worry-free. Doing parties/bonfires/bbqs I began to get some ideas in stepping up my game with some lighting and sound so decided to invest in cdjs, speakers and cheap ebay jelly lights and decorating my place to set the mood with a party atmosphere.
As more and more people started to hear about DC it began to be a place to hang out to just chill and unwind meet new friends. Once DC began to get known for its events and parties it was time to move to something bigger than my home since I wasn’t able to contain the amount of people that would come just to experience a DC event. So decided to relocate to warehouses throughout Los Angeles and do underground events with the support from my fiance Oli Hernandez, DC fam and my closest friends Christian,Jesus,Gaudi,Dsoe,
Now that we have come this far in doing our own production and events we have stepped it up by hosting live streams every Friday night 9pm pst on facebook and welcoming all genres and DJ/producers to drop their sets live https://www.facebook.com/
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been smooth with all the support from friends and family. Only struggle is lack of locations/warehouses where communities look down upon.
Tell us more about your work.
I do most of the planning and organizing for upcoming events. I’m proud of the fact that Deathcap has come a long way from where it started. Where it started from the ground up and built on an organic foundation of friends and family.
I feel like DeathCamp is organic that’s what sets me apart from other collectives.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying humble. Being humble has been my main characteristic from the beginning. treat other the same way you want to be treated, treat everyone with respect and that’s what I been doing since day one. opening my home to all who come with respect.
