Today we’d like to introduce you to Tian Gan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a concept artist and studying at Art Center College of Design. I am from China. When I was a child, I draw ugly sketches every day and make my own stories. But my parents didn’t want me to be an artist because they believed that the artist could not have a stable life in China. And that time I didn’t have the bravery and confidence to pursue a life or a career as an artist. So I followed my parents’ expectations and got a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in management, and then I worked as a product manager in Baidu (one of the biggest IT companies in China). But there is always a place deep in my heart that shouts to myself that I want to draw and paint. Three years ago, I picked up my pen again and decided to study art abroad. I start my journey as a concept artist really late. But this is a serious decision I made for myself after experiencing a lot. Right now, I enjoy sketching, designing, drawing and painting every day, no matter how hard it is.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a concept artist. I design characters and environments for video games and movies. I use Photoshop, 3D, and VR to create my works. The goal of my works is to visualize the world of a game or movie, to entertain people.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
To me, the success of a concept artist is that—- Works are used in games and movies or Building my own IP, which can be published or appreciated by the audience. In order to succeed, I think the key characteristic is never giving up, keeping drawing and painting every day, and always observing and being inspired by this world.
