Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Brenner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In Chicago, I ran one of the most famous blues bars in town. It was called the Wise Fools Pub. Working there gave me the opportunity to meet all the great Blues legends. My wife, Leslie, and I decided to move here in 1980 in hopes of opening a bar, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. We spent the next ten years working, starting a family and saving money, still dreaming of opening up a bar.
Instead in 1990, we, along with Tom and Emily Kaplan (from Caffe Latte & Hugo’s Restaurant) teamed up to open a coffee house that we ran for 17 years called Highland Grounds. From there, we opened up a second Hugo’s in Studio City in 2000, with a third partner, Bill Kohne, the restaurants flourished leading us to open Hugo’s Tacos.
In January of this year, I turned 65, and I felt my best days in the restaurant business were behind me. I still had a thirst to help people. I love talking to people one on one and I started to search for something that would fill that void. I discovered it with hypnotherapy.
I began taking classes with Lisa Hubler of Mind Matters. Lisa has done a wonderful thing. She has combined hypnotherapy with restorative yoga, the first person I have found who does that. Putting someone into restorative positions creates a true calming experience. Clients go deep into a trance and wake up refreshed. No matter how stressed a client might be, by the end of the session, they have found tranquility and equanimity.
I have now received my certification and have just started my practice. I like to think I am a relaxologist!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always bumps in the road.
Highland Grounds was great fun and we met a lot of very talented people. Some of which have gone on to be big successes in entertainment, But the daily running of it and trying to stay afloat was a constant battle.
Overall, struggle is like pain. No matter how I describe the pain I might be in, you can’t feel it. Same is true with struggle. The anguish, the sleepless nights, are something only the person going through it can feel. Yes, I have had struggles and disappointments, but I also have a loving supportive wife and two fantastic daughters. I consider myself very lucky!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Richard Brenner Hypnotherapy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My new business is called Richard Brenner Hypnotherapy.
In hypnotherapy, we deal with the subconscious mind. The idea is that we help you access the answers to your questions from inside of you, whatever the problem might be. I believe that each of us is the greatest healer for ourselves, but it helps to have someone help facilitate because often our fears get in the way.
I’ll walk you through a session:
First, I set aside 2-2 1/2 hours for a session. I do not want to rush you in and out. We sit and talk about what you’re looking for and how I can help. You are then invited to pick some healing stones you would like to have on your body or hold in your hands.
We then move over to the couch where I set up pillows using restorative yoga techniques to make your body relaxed and comfortable. This accesses your body’s own healing system. I finish that off with an eye pillow and headphones to shut out the outside world.
I then begin a guided trance, using the information you’ve given me, accompanied by soothing music. It usually takes between 30 minutes to 45 minutes. After I finish and bring you back to everyday consciousness, we talk again until you feel you are ready to move on. I also make a recording of the trance part of the session and send it to you so you can listen to it and reinforce your original experience.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plan for the future is to grow my practice, one person at a time.
I am in no rush. All I want to be is available for people and help them in this stressed-out time.
