Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Santa Cruz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anthony. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Telco Brewery started with 2 Telephone guys that wanted to open a brewery. Tony Santa Cruz has been a homebrewer for nine years. About four years ago, Jaime asked me to teach him to homebrew. We were acquaintances from work. The next thing you know, we were talking about opening up a Brewery. Jaime said, “let’s call it Telco Brewery”. I instantly fell in love with the name. If there were 2 things we knew, it was telecom and beer!
The whole process took three years to complete. On September 29th, 2018 Telco brewery opened to the public. We are turning one year old at the end of September and I wouldn’t change any part of this awesome experience.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening any business has its ups and downs. When you’re dealing with government entities, it could even become more challenging. We actually had a good experience with all government departments Besides some architectural delays and equipment hiccups, things went pretty smooth. We did a lot of the work ourselves, which kept us very busy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Telco Brewery – what should we know?
I’m the Head Brewer and handyman. I have a passion for building. I was able to take that and build most of the things in the brewery.
The beer is what I’m definitely the proudest of. When I started brewing nine years ago, I became addicted and brewed more than I can count. That helped me translate it to the industrial/manufacture side. There was a small learning curve going from 10 gallons to 310 gallons. That challenge was the fun part.
Telco Brewery is run by two families. If you come into Telco, you will always see an owner. We take pride in what we do. We visit all our customer. We work the counter. It’s a small brewery, but that’s the way we like it.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hard work! You have to be willing to get dirty to be part of this business. Everything is possible you just need to do it. We still have our regular jobs with the phone company. We have taken our hobbies and created a business. If we don’t put in the hours and the hard work, this place won’t succeed. Working for the phone company is a job. Owning the brewery is a passion.
