Today we’d like to introduce you to Alxander Ivey.
Alxander, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been making art my entire life. Ever since I was a child, but I didn’t start taking it seriously till about three years ago. I got kicked out of cal poly Pomona for not completing my remedial math on time, once I left I decided I had no other choice but dedicate my life to my one passion which is art, I had no other choice.
Has it been a smooth road?
Pursuing a career in the arts hasn’t been easy, and it still isn’t easy till this day. I started doing local group shows and taking commissions around south central when I was about 16, and let’s just say that I was taken advantage of by the LA art scene I was selling a lot of work for ridiculously low prices and dj’ing shows for free all for the art. I was running myself dry. I practically destroyed my life in those three years of trying to get myself known while working the typical shitty 9-5.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a freelance Artist, I make Mixed Media Art. It usually consist of intricate collages displaying P.O.C. In nature/natural habitats. Or color blocked faces, I’ve been working a lot with them that. I’m extremely proud of that fact that I can inspire others through my work, and make them wanna create their own zones and collages. I think what sets me apart from other artist is my authenticity. You can till where I come from, where I grew up and my influences all through my work. I spent most of my adolescence in leimert park and my work is a direct reflection of that.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about south central is the people. You truly meet the most beautiful people from just going to leimert on a Sunday. Or going to a backyard show. What I dislike is the rapid gentrification, it seems like everyday there’s adding on to the construction of train or new companies trying to sale trendy apartments in historically black areas. It makes me sick that the city is trying to kick out poor P.O.C.
