Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Keever.
Abigail, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Texas to a mother who let my sister and I explore every embarrassing form of creative expression. I came out to LA in 2005 to get a degree in Fashion Design and by the time I graduated wanted nothing to do with it. I started working on a short film right before I graduated and loved it so much I decided to make the smart move and become a new freelancer in a recession. I eventually fell in with a company who create comedy TV and that’s where it all started.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t. I think that if you find yourself in the comedy world the last feelings you ever experience are confidence and comfort. There have been growing pains as I have branched out and explored new genres but everything difficult in life really is just a wedgie, pick it and move on.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a Costune Designer for print, commercial, TV, film, tours… you name it, people wearing clothes, I’ve designed it. Even though I have spent most of my career in comedy the best part of my job is we really don’t need to specialize. Every Costume Designer loves to research and completely dissect a character to build an entire human being and present them to the world. We are the department that speaks before any other and it’s an honor to tell a story in any genre, but I will say I am a sucker for a laugh. I am most proud that I take even the silliest project seriously in the delivery and give it care and attention to detail.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Adaptability. Period. Every director is different and communicates differently so having the ability to read that person and be able to understand everything they want whether they know the word for it or not. I’d also say resourcefulness as well. Budgets come in all sizes and decisions are made last minute so the ability to figure it out and show up with a product better than they could’ve imagined is always a goal of mine. Lastly, a handy supply of antacids.
