Meet Sara Khalid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Khalid.

Sara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I always had an itch for expression. Any chance I had to express myself boldly I would take. From coloring my hair green in middle school, to wearing bold outfits to school, I always felt the need to show my inner creative on the outside. Pushing away from green hair and outlandish outfits in high school, a curiosity grew inside me that raised the question, “ What other ways can I show my perspective?” A few months later, I found myself with $300 in hand and a camera for sale. From the minute I picked up the camera, I felt in my element. I remember looking at one of my first photoshoots and saying to myself “ Damn, I’m good at this!”. Since this day in 2017, I have spent much time creating through Photography, Videography, and Styling. I use these creative outlets to tell my story and share my vision and perspective.

Has it been a smooth road?
My creative journey has been filled with passion, insight, and new opportunities unfolding from every angle. When I first started my creative endeavors in 2017, every project I did was purely passion-driven. I was working with no budget and little resources. Those were my favorite times because I didn’t have to think about what I was creating, and I had no timeline to meet. I have just recently started freelancing, and it’s been one of the biggest challenges, but the most rewarding. I am completely self-taught, my mistakes are my greatest teachers. Being an artist, there is no guideline on how to make it and find success in your work. I know my career path requires risk-taking, letting go of fear, and being comfortable and accustomed to change, all things that I’ve learned to embrace. My daily mantra is ” Everything that comes into my life is here to help me learn and grow”. That really helps me stay aligned.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a Photographer, Videographer, Stylist, and Singer/Songwriter. Phew, that was a lot to say haha. I specialize in mostly Editorial/Brand content, but I have tapped into the music industry more, working with artists to curate visual content for their brand. I like to say I have a certain vision, and when people reach out to work with me they come for my specific style. My work is colorful, but not too over-bearing. I love playing with grain and weird textures to give my photos a more raw feel. I also style almost all of my shoots, choosing pieces that are bold and fun. In my video work, I produce content using my VHS camera, which has become a staple in my branding. I love curating mini videos to expand my photo projects, it brings in a completely different perspective and story to the still images.

One thing I am most proud of in my work is my ability to capture woman showing their power and boldness. I live to make woman see themselves in a new light, I always hope that they walk away from working together seeing their true power. Aside from that, I am proud of the energy I bring onto set. When people work with me, they always walk out feeling rejuvenated, excited, and even more confident! I embrace the people I work with and remind them of their greatness quite literally the entire shoot, I’ve been told I’m a great hype-woman. I just want every person I come in contact with to love themselves a little more, and I capture them in a way where they see that. Lastly, I am a singer/ songwriter which is something I don’t talk about too much. I work with artists as a writer, but I also (very lowkey) have been working on my own project for about a year now, it keeps growing and shifting so I don’t know when it will see the light of day, but it is a part of my career that I cant wait to watch fruition.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The creative world is growing and shifting every day. I hope to see more woman lead in the industry!
