Meet YUNGMORPHEUS

Today we’d like to introduce you to YUNGMORPHEUS.

YUNGMORPHEUS, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Not sure how this all began really…I was breaking a lot in highschool and college and wound up pivoting to music around the time I finished school just because. Didn’t imagine it would wind up where it’s at, but now I’m tryna keep it pushing forward.

Has it been a smooth road?
Hell naw it hasn’t been a smooth road. At the end of the day all of that builds character though, so I’d be an herb if I just complained about the hardships. We all got em. Primary barriers were always capital and socially based really; I’ve always had a clear idea of what I want to do with this medium, but the oppressive capitalist nature of the society we live in can impede that, naturally.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I rap and make beats. Repping the label Rawshit. Realistically, I’d say I’m most proud of the ethos we approach what we do with. Niggas is solid, confident in themselves, respectful, yet indignant when necessary. I know no one can do what we do, period. No one sounds like us, no one has the same passion as we do, and the pen can’t be touched.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
LA goes hard. I’m originally from Miami, so a lot of the things I like about here are things I like about home, with some added accouterments. Just dropped a joint with Fumitake Tamura on Leaving Records and have my solo album coming soon.

I probably like all the white people with dreadlocks the least out here lol. I think because of all the openness/hippie shit associated with LA, a lot of cats get the politics behind cultural appropriation wildly misconstrued and wind up being far more detrimental and problematic to social justice efforts than helpful. A lot of empty rhetoric in LA! As with anywhere though…
