Today we’d like to introduce you to Calli Martin.
Calli, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as an intern in college for a fashion show producer named Jan Strimple. I worked my way up as an assistant stylist for the shows she produced and loved every second of it. I then went on to be a model agent, but quickly realized it wasn’t for me and started freelance styling. I did that for about two years and realized I wanted to be doing bigger things with my career, so I decided to move to LA. 🙂
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been anything but a smooth road and I’m sure every other artist out there can tell you the same thing. It’s a struggle to get your name out there as well as making connections, but once you do, it’s somewhat smooth sailing from there.
My advice to women who are just starting their journey is to always stay 100% positive. It’s so easy to get down on yourself in this industry and it’s important that you always have your own back. Also, LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! Shadow a stylist, assist, intern… etc, knowledge is power.

As of right now, I am interning for Taylor Jacobson in West Hollywood and It’s been a great experience so far! I can’t wait to learn more from her and her assistant Rebecca. They’re incredible women with impeccable taste.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I found my mentor early on in college and she has gotten me to where I am today so I’m grateful for that. Good mentors are hard to come by, but when you click with someone and they’re willing to teach you about their craft as well as guide you, I think that’s when you know you’ve found a good one. 🙂
