Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Huff.
Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
All my friends told me I spammed them with food posts on Instagram and Snapchat, so I started sayimafoodie as a space to post all my food. I would post food I cooked and baked, as well as what I ate out. Then, I discovered food influencer accounts. I was inspired by them, and by following their pages, I learned to take better photos and how to stage shots. I bought a DSLR camera off of facebook marketplace to step up my photo quality, and now my camera is my best friend. I learned the strings of being an influencer from reaching out to people and asking questions. Eventually, I got invited to my first event, and from there it has just been networking! I love that I can meet new people through a social media platform and bond over something we all love…food!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Many people do not know about everything that goes into an influencer’s post and engagement. There are transportation costs, time spent photographing (sometimes even cooking), post-editing, caption-writing, and engaging. I have been working hard this summer to create content, but at school I like to keep a good balance between being a student and influencer.
As great as these past six months have been, my foodie life took a sharp turn recently. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and found out that I am gluten and lactose-intolerant. So many foods have these ingredients, but I’ve realized that there are just as many alternatives out there! I am starting to shift my page to be more health-focused by finding restaurants with dietary-friendly options and brands that sell products catered to people like me that taste just as good!
Food Influencer – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
I am a food influencer, photographer, and recipe creator! I’m working on building my personal brand–my newest addition are the hashtags #sayimglutenfree and #sayimdairyfree. I would like “Say I’m…” to be the main focus of my brand. With this recent health hurdle, I am now specializing in photographing gluten-free and dairy-free foods at restaurants as well as creating recipes with products that are gluten/dairy-free to post on my Instagram page. I also offer photography services for food establishments. I am known for colorful, vibrant photos, longer captions and honest reviews and am proud of being transparent and sharing my story with my followers. What sets me apart is my age–I’m 19–and my brand name!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as being happy and content with yourself and your work first. Don’t compare yourself to other people because there will always be someone out there that is better than you. You must be happy with what you are doing–just do what you love, and don’t let other people influence your decisions!
