Meet Annemarie Davies of United Pole Artists in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annemarie Davies.

Annemarie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2002, I began my stripping career. Due to the direction the strip club industry in Los Angeles was taking, I decided to work at a bikini bar instead, Jumbo’s Clown Room. It was then and there that I decided to start my own business which started my trajectory as an entrepreneur. I loved pole dancing in particular and saw the potential with the pole dance industry, as it was budding in the early 2000’s and started to really take off around 2007 and 08.

In 2009, I launched United Pole Artists, which over the last ten years, has become very well known in our industry. UPA is a trusted brand and promotes pole dancing to mainstream audiences. UPA also informs the community on their favorite dancers, events and opportunities in the industry.

Over time, I reconnected with my stripper roots and have become and advocate for strippers, sex workers and their rights. I’m still running UPA, but I am moving on into doing more public speaking and raising awareness for strippers all across our country. I am on the board of directors for Soldiers of Pole, an activism group with a goal of unionizing strippers everywhere.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back on all of my growth, I would say there were smooth times and struggles. But mostly, struggles, as I tend to take the road less traveled. Typically, I ask myself, what is everyone not doing but will be the next big thing? Then the choice is easy to make. But once I’ve made the choice, because there are very few examples, struggle ensues. For instance, I decided to start live streaming pole dance events back in 2010. Back when no one knew much about it. To make matters more complicated, I had to learn how to live stream to my direct website, without using Ustream and/or Livestream (which were the two most popular at the time).

To make my life even more difficult, most recently I was in an accident. While driving my Buddy Scooter, I was hit by a car in December of 2018. My foot was crushed between the car and the back of the scooter, amputating on impact all five of my toes and the ball of my foot. As a dancer and entrepreneur, I only make money when I work. So, I had to stop dancing for obvious reasons, for the time being. However, I had to continue to maintain my businesses, while also dealing with the transition of not only losing half of my foot but the job that I loved most in the world, dancing on stage.

This new struggle has definitely made me stronger and powerful though, so I am extremely grateful for it and for what’s to come because of it.

Please tell us more about your story. What should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a serial entrepreneur, I would say my most favorite business venture is the one that is based on my persona and message. My followers call me The Queen of Sexy and my message is all about loving yourself and accepting yourself. I’m known for teaching women how to get in touch with their sensual and sexual side, to drop their inhibitions and also, how to talk to themselves in a positive manner. TQoS is its own entity now. I share podcasts that are all about how to deal with everyday life, I share tutorials on how to get in touch with your sexy, how to create smooth movements with your body.

Through all of this I’m now selling coaching sessions. I’ve created an OnlyFans account that caters to men and women (mostly women) on how to be free. Free of what others think, free to be themselves and use myself as an example. You can be how you choose to be. You don’t have to be what “society” or anyone else wants you to be.

What sets me apart is my authenticity. When I’m talking to people through the camera and in my posts, I communicate how I would if I am talking to a friend. I also lay it all out on the line and let others peer into my life, into my vulnerability. My main message to them is, “we are the same, I have struggles too. Nothing is perfect for me just like you.” In that type of communication, I believe that my audience truly feels connected to me, like they know me. I’m most proud of the community of people that follow me because we get to share our lives together. Without them, I have nothing. My followers that are inspired by me are what I’m most proud of. They are the ones I get my inspiration from. I try to tell them all the time how much they mean to me, that without them I have nothing.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance is THE most important thing to my success. Just. Keep. Going. I learn as I go, so if I stop going, I stop learning. If I stop going, I stop gaining. Especially when I was learning to live stream, man, I wanted to give up on that so bad. But, there was something inside of me that kept saying, “don’t quit now”. It was like even if I truly wanted to quit, there was something in me that wouldn’t let that happen.

Live streaming was the best thing I ever did for my career. It was hard, so learned I lessons, it was new so I gained visibility in a way that others didn’t. The technology I learned I still use today for other types of business. If I had not persevered, I wouldn’t be able to say all of those things.
