Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Beck.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Brett. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Like many entrepreneurs, my story is long and bumpy, but here’s the short and sweet version. I was born in Memphis, TN, and grew up in Plano, TX.
Most of my childhood was amply decorated with diverse sports; however, by the end of High School, I was burnt out with athletics. Then college descended down upon me, and I discovered this path wasn’t going to be a fulfilling ride either. What I did know was that I wanted to be a self-made man (versus the 9-5 grind).
After college, I traversed diverse career paths from sales to venture capital to managing nightclubs, in an attempt to discover my calling. During this time of exploration, I was living somewhat recklessly and didn’t have a great sense of purpose or direction.
Then at the vibrant age of 22, everything changed.
I got together with a couple of my childhood friends and launched our first company, based in Denver, CO. It was a product-based business that generated millions in sales throughout the United States. We proved to be an impressively capable team with great products and strong marketing capabilities. This rewarding experience is when I found my calling/niche, and in particular, I fell in love with the direct to consumer business model.
Later, I trained in the “entrepreneurial gym” during the years that followed. This period included projects ranging in various levels of success (and humbling experiences). Ultimately what I received were the invaluable gifts of grit and adaptability.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I skydived into the exhilaration of business at an early age and never took the time to be still and explore who I was. Embarrassingly my ego was so big I wouldn’t have been able to see a whole lot even if I did take a look. What I did notice was the darkness of feeling lost. Eventually, I wandered into the world of pain medicine and lost everything. It only took a couple of years to decimate the life I had built.
As I think back, it’s crazy to think about how this cunning and quiet assassin sneaked up on me. In the beginning, I started taking these pills for energy. Taking them allowed me to work almost around the clock. I honestly thought they were a miracle pill, and I didn’t think of them as an addictive drug. My moment of realization finally arrived at the age of 35. One of my products was knocked off, and I began to lose everything, and the addiction spiraled out of control.
I wasn’t broken; I was shattered. I didn’t hit rock bottom; I discovered hell has a basement. It was from this tortuous place is where and when the real work began.
It was clear that if I wanted to see another day, I had to crawl my way out of this hell and start working on myself. This journey began with rehab, a program, therapy, journaling, and fitness. For the first time in 35 years, I had an opportunity to focus solely on myself and who I was. Whatsmore, I had to learn how to cope with situations and life in general, without using any substances. Eventually, hiking, meditation, and exercise became my new outlet and solution to life’s tantrums. I found myself surrounded by a new group of people who expressed unconditional love, who eventually became the family I got to choose.
I’m proud of everything good I created in my life, but none of it would matter if I weren’t alive today. I have lost many good people in my life. The fact that I am here, fully present, and able to raise my three beautiful daughters is a big f-ing deal. I am becoming the man I always knew I could be, and I live an expansive life that’s nothing short of incredible.
I will always be grateful for this second chance.
The last ten years have included pain, self-discovery, and blessings. Living a sober life offered many unexpected gifts, and when I began to cultivate self-esteem, it also endowed me with genuine confidence. It was this path sobriety that led me to find my true passions and authentic self.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Believe Pursue – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fast forward to today, I am back where I belong in the direct to consumer product industry. This new incarnation of my professional life has a pronounced focus on health and fitness products – while living a healthy lifestyle myself as the fundamental bedrock.
My new project is a lifestyle and product development business called Believe Pursue LLC and was created with my wife and three great friends. We design and manufacture fitness and lifestyle products for clients (while also developing in-house products). Our motto is that we only work with people and projects that align with our values.
One of these in-house products/projects is a brand called Bellabooty, scheduled to launch soon. This is a particularly special project because I’ve been thinking about it for many years. The Bellabooty product is a patented resistance training platform, which people will use to train their inner thighs, legs, and glutes. We use the Bellabooty machines for our weekly group classes, and people love it!
For the last five years, we organized multiple events, test groups, and pop-up classes in the LA area. We were able to collect substantial data and testimonials that we used to create a world-class product. Our endgame is for Bellabooty to be one of the go-to brands for lower body training.
I firmly believe that a great company cannot run on ego. I am lucky to have an incredible team of partners where there’s a shared vision. As the CEO, our collective happiness is something that I strive to be mindful of and help facilitate. In contrast to the suit and tie culture, these days, I’m more about experience-based business meetings.
They are often conducted outdoors and include hikes, beach workout sessions, and paddleboarding on the ocean.
Being active will always be an essential part of my life, and during my free time, I spend time helping others. Over the last ten years, I’ve been mentored by many excellent health and fitness industry experts.
My wife and I both have the same passion for coaching and helping people, so we created a brand called BECKFIT, which is our shared training business.
As a result of extracting myself from the darkness of addiction and the associated self- cultivation, many of my fitness clients feel comfortable confiding in me as well. I am eternally grateful for this unexpected opportunity.
