Meet Blythe Baines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blythe Baines.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Blythe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up listening to classic rock musicians like Tom Petty, The Beatles, Radiohead, and Nirvana, which contributed to my sound- some people describe it as “dark” and “mystical.” Despite my long journey in deciding to go full time into music, I’ve managed to gain over one million streams on Spotify since my first release in 2017.

I was born in San Francisco to an Indian father and a mother from the Southern United States. I spent the early years of my life performing in the San Francisco Girls Chorus and skating on the San Francisco synchronized ice skating team. In 2007, I started independent study and left the country to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon return to the U.S., I moved to Los Angeles and began singing hooks on songs that my rapper friends would make, before ultimately deciding to pursue music. In the latter half of 2017, I got my first single “Stars” played on multiple radio stations and then began work on my EP with my producer Carter Soso.

I recently released a single called “White Rabbit feat. Snoop Dogg.” It was my first time having any artist feature on my music, and it was so exciting to have such a legend in hip-hop work on my material. The lyric video can be found here:

Today, I am in the middle of releasing singles from my upcoming EP, The Truth. I’m still continuing to write, record, and play music in the Los Angeles area. The Truth is my second EP. My first EP, Games, was released through Universal Music Group. My music video for the song from the first EP, “Spoiled,” played on MTV in multiple countries. The “Spoiled” music video can be found here:

The Truth EP is going to release under the SM1 Music Group/Sony Music label later this year. My new EP builds on my earlier music’s themes and messages. My main goal is to make music that stays true to itself, while still appealing to a wide range of people. I love releasing new music and am so excited to show the world what I have in store on this EP.

If I could give one piece of advice to new artists is to really take time to learn yourself and develop your musical personality. When you write, your voice as an artist is really coming through and you want it to be unique and something different! To me, a lot of what music is lacking right now is personality. You can listen to a song and it will sound catchy, but you can still no understand who the artist it after listening to it. I really like artists that have a strong sense of self!

My other piece of advice is to not be scared about releasing things if they’re not perfect at first. Nobody is expecting your first release to be the most amazing thing in the world. It’s better to have something out there then to wait to be at a level where it’s completely perfect.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nobody’s path is completely smooth, but I believe that if you don’t focus on the obstacles in your way, there will be fewer obstacles. If the doors in your mind are open, the doors will open for you in real life.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I write music and specialize in writing and singing catchy hooks for hip-hop influenced songs! That is what I’m known for in LA although I mostly write for myself now.

I am most proud of following through on everything I’ve wanted to do with music. It also makes me proud that it’s had such a positive response!

What sets me apart: Everyone is unique, but it is easy to want to conform to what’s popular (especially in music.) I have stayed the course with my material and tried to come up with something truly unique for my listeners and myself.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My new EP, The Truth is going to release under the SM1 Music Group/Sony Music label later this year. My new EP builds on my earlier music’s themes and messages. My main goal is to make music that stays true to itself, while still appealing to a wide range of people. I love releasing new music and am so excited to show the world what I have in store on this EP. My plan for the future is to keep up with my fans and keep writing music that I love and that they will hopefully love too.
