Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Rosoff, Katie Young, Marissa Rivera, Nora Nagatani, and Jacki Von Preysing.
Brittany, Katie, Marissa, Nora, and Jacki, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We, the Feminoles, are an up and coming all-female comedy group currently based in Los Angeles, CA.
Five lovely ladies went to Florida State University and graduated at varying times. At a certain point, we all took our separate journeys out west, to the land of the dreamers. Long stories short — we landed in stand up.
Finding each other to be very entertaining and the scene riddled with men, we decided to create our own show to shine the spotlight on ourselves and other female, LGBTQ+, and underheard comedians. Together, we will take over the world. Or…ya know…the comedy one, anyway.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Coming together as a group was extremely easy – we balance each other really well and have fun creating a space for us and others to showcase comedy. However, we only discovered our need for a supportive group environment through our own individual struggles.
Over and over we found a disproportionate amount of female comedians on the scene, versus the amount of female comedians actually being booked on shows. After experiencing a disappointing amount of overall diversity and inclusion in stand up, we decided to join forces as a company to extend an additional outlet for change.
And, to be honest, another challenge was our struggle with how many times we should mention that we’re women in this bio. We are. But that shouldn’t matter.
Please tell us about The Feminoles.
The Feminoles are determined to shine the spotlight on women, the LGBTQ community, and underrepresented comedians. Our mission is to celebrate and elevate these voices at a time when comedy has become a salve for our current social climate (also, to be seriously funny).
We find that when women get together, to not only support each other but also uplift each other . . . . We tend to succeed and get. shit. done.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. Except maybe 12 more hours to the day.
