Meet Suniel Fox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suniel Fox.

Suniel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Music has been a love and passion my since age 11. Started out as a guitarist and played in rock bands for many years, after moving to LA from Orange County I played with Rock Kills Kid, an Alternative band on Warner Bros. After playing several national tours, I was introduced to electronic music through my girlfriend who was deep in the scene. I saw many artists including (The Glitch Mob and Adam Freeland) at these festivals playing some of the most beautiful sounds and I realized I felt limited in my capacity as a band member. So I started learning synthesis and music production. Along the way, I fell into scoring commercials and contributing to a few independent films including “Going Places” now on Amazon Prime. However, I’ve always loved writing my own music. One of my favorite bands is Sigur Ros, from Iceland. And I always wanted to combine that type of ambient sound with a heavy electronic edge. The Everwide EP is the result of this exploration.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing about my life has been smooth! I’m half Indian, and I grew up in white suburban Orange County so I always felt very different and somewhat unwelcome. It wasn’t till I moved up to LA that I felt I fit in. I’ve always loved playing in bands but somehow every band was always riddled with personality or drug issues. Its really what led me to making my own music (which has its own difficulties as well 😉 I would say my biggest challenge was I always felt safe in the world, bad shit only happened on TV and so I wasn’t prepared for my life to be turned upside down when armed robbers came in to my home at 2am in Laurel Canyon. They shot my dog five times and then shot me in the neck. They were looking for whatever they could get their hands on, I gave em a few thousand bucks whatever I had.. that messed me up for a long time… Really set back my plans with music. Its been now ten years and its finally feeling normal again. But I realize that I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been and music is flowing out of me like crazy. I can’t wait to share this music and start collaborating again.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Finishing this Everwide EP was a crucial step toward being able to let go of the past (in fact I’m smiling right now, because right when i said that, I realize those words ring even more true.) The next focus is crafting the live show as well as dreaming up the next batch of compositions. Id like people to know that I write intense and emotional Ambient Alternative Electronic Music and you can see me perform live at the Hi-Hat in Highland Park on September 25th 2019.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I look back on my time playing in my old band The Surrender. It was a band i had started from the ground up and was with some of my best friends. This was one band that I had very high hopes for and although we never broke out, the lessons and the hardship we went through together are a part of who I am now.
