Meet Trailblazer Eliza C Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliza C Gray.

Eliza, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Dedicated visual branding consultant with a fashion focus. I have been a stylist for 6+ years in production, editorial, and personal. Coming from an art background, I feel makes my journey a little unique. I am always looking for out of the box brands and people. I like to think of content curating as art curating.

I also have a soft spot for up and coming brown artists. Fashion editorial for a while was and is European beauty focused. I didn’t see myself in a magazine, or my Asian friend, or my Mexican friend. It bothered me that the colors in magazines and campaigns didn’t reflect the diversity in the world. It has changed a lot since, but we still have work to do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main struggle was breaking out of my box and selling myself to people. You have to believe in yourself before other people do. You need to befriend people that support you and block negative energy that isn’t constructive. Not everyone will like you, not every collaboration is going to be successful, but learn from your mistakes quickly. Don’t be afraid to make them and don’t be too prideful to shut up and learn.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Anything visual branding related. Styling, modeling, photography. If I don’t LOVE the product, it’s a failure for me. Learning to say no to things and pushing yourself toward the clientele you want to work with is necessary.

I would say my start as an artist had me craving unique brands, people, camera angles, etc. I understand what the look should be to photograph well (styling), and the angles to get a strong composition in a photo (photography), and picking the model and setting to make it come alive and look like a piece of art (artist). I love all parts of the process equally.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I would say I had very supportive business-oriented people in my life that pursued their own businesses and believed in me. Without them, I may have quit and lacked confidence in the process. It was never easy however and still isn’t. Going after your dreams isn’t a path for the faint of heart. It gets narrow and lonely sometimes.

Having people that believe in you can mean the world as a child and change their path completely.
