Today we’d like to introduce you to Aline Ponce.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aline. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born in Rio, Brazil, I was raised in with a father who was very involved in the arts as a painter and sculptor. I remember being fascinated with the idea of making something out of nothing; the creative power of witnessing a thought or vision in your head come to life. My dad was also very involved in the Japanese community in Brazil and we were exposed to different cultures and philosophies at a pretty young age.
We truly lived a nomadic lifestyle of never staying in one place for too long. I quickly realized that there was so much to see and experience, although it was also bittersweet coming to acknowledge the impermanence of all things. Once I started creating photos, I believe it gave me a vehicle to express all that we feel as humans living in a world filled with duality and unanswered questions.
As an adult, I realized how crucial it was that I find an outlet for my angst and self-doubt and need for making something out of nothing. Something that would reflect my inner-space and the things that I struggle with as well as the things that inspire me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t believe anyone truly ever has a completely smooth road. I think it is the things that bring you contrast that really make you grow as an individual and as an artist. I think the biggest struggle has been finding the courage to put myself out there and let others see my evolution as a person and artist. The fear of judgment and self-doubt can be very intense when you feel exposed in certain ways. I struggled until I was able to realize that my love for self-expression was bigger than my fear of being judged.
To be authentic with the imbedded programming that fitting in equals acceptance, requires stepping out of your self-created box and really explore what’s deep within oneself. Navigating through all the mind blocks and internal mechanisms to keep one “safe and protected” is needed if we are to create something that resonates with the truth of who we are; beyond the surface identities of gender, age, social status, etc.
Please tell us about Aline Ponce Photography.
I am part of two different companies, Aline Ponce Photography where I create self-portraiture, as well as working with clients interested in Boudoir photography, portraiture and fine art.
Along with my husband, we also shoot food & beverage, product and lifestyle photography at Hulswit Designs.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I think most people tend to carry a lot of guilt and regret about this and that. For a long time, I carried tremendous regret for not having found my passion earlier in life. I would think about all the time I “lost” doing other things that didn’t fulfill me in the same way. Now though, I can sincerely say that none of it feels like it was a waste. It actually created the fuel that drives me so hard now to pull up my sleeves and get to the work of creating and exploring.
