Meet Leah Good

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Good.

Leah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My first career was fantastic. I had the opportunity to work directly with high school kids, ones who needed guidance and direction. It truly was an incredibly satisfying experience. However, after nearly five years, I knew I needed a change. I decided to go back to school for something that I really really loved-photography. And so, at 28 and having never used Photoshop, I enrolled in school for a degree in commercial photography. Four years plus an internship in London, England, I returned to Toronto and have worked in various roles within the industry. However, I never really found my niche within the industry.

It wasn’t until last year when I purchased a Polaroid camera that I rediscovered my love for the medium. I found myself feeling far more at home without the trappings and expectations of digital photography, able to strip away some of those things and simply shoot from my gut. I have realized that instant photography aligns far better with my own personal philosophies. Now, I am actively pursuing instant photography as a way to both see and interact with the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles I have experienced are similar to what I imagine every artist encounters-is what I am saying valuable? Is it derivative? What if no one cares? Can I do this? The distinguishing struggle that comes with pursuing instant photography is that it isn’t congruent with the current nature of the medium. Budgets are shrinking, timelines continue to contract, and instant images are seem more as a hobby rather than a craft.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Leah Good Photography – what should we know?
This business is just starting! It is a new turn for me, one that I am really excited about! Currently, the plan is to specialize in crafting instant images for virtually every purpose. I truly believe the medium is conducive to any space that digital images are. I hope to become known as the woman who creates tangible imagery-ones you can hold in your hand!-for everything from editorial work to weddings.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Holding on to my vision. I know that there will be pressure to deviate from instant imagery, to ‘just go digital’, but I want to remain true to who I am and how I understand the world.
