Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Polsinelli.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey to success started in my home town of Toronto, Canada, 30+ years ago. I was born into a family of hairdressers and soon realized my life would forever be transformed. I’m known for my creative designs which have influenced hairdressers all over the world.
I started in the family business and branched out to become business partners with an existing salon. In early 2000, my talent was recognized by an industry icon, Robert Lobetta, and together we forged an incredible body of work spanning over a decade.
My biggest motivation is self-discovery, which has led me to create my own Fusion Cutting Methodology. This newly formed education system has served me well. I feel that hair is a wonderful medium to cut and transform.
My achievements include working in the TV industry, fashion week, salon owner, Global Art Director, producing close to a 100 cutting and creative collections globally, platform artist and I have enjoyed performing for thousands of hairdressers at Gala Trend Events around the world.
In 2008, I embarked on a new adventure which relocated me to Europe. With my complete and in-depth education system, I thought it was time to open an Academy in the heart of Florence, Italy. Being from Italian heritage, I believe that Florence is one of the most influential cities for fashion, architecture, culture, food, and design. It is an experience of a lifetime for hairdressers attending from all over the world.
Currently, I represent Davines and serve as one of their Top Artists. It is a perfect fit for an artist like me because Davines promotes creativity and individuality, which is the groundwork for evolution. I also love working in the salon, John of Italy, in Westlake Village 2 days a week. It’s the best way to keep my skills sharp and hands constantly moving. My bond with my clients keeps everything real.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road to success has always been challenging, but I always fight for what I believe in. In the beginning, I would ask myself if I was good enough to do the things as an artist I dreamt of becoming and what steps did I have to take to even get there. Luckily, I trained hard enough and was prepared when opportunity knocked. I also believe in being in the right place at the right time by making yourself ready and available. I think my biggest obstacle was having to constantly prove myself to the people who would try to prevent me from growing by keeping me down. But I’m pretty stubborn, and I love proving people wrong. Also, staying at the top is often harder than getting there. Having to create something better than your last collection is often hard. You have to research and keep yourself informed on a daily basis, or you fall behind, especially in this hyperactive world. As they say, “you’re only as good as the last thing you’ve done.”
Please tell us about MP Hair Co.
My job is multi-faceted. I’m a hairdresser that works at a salon in Westlake Village, I am an International artist that represents Davines, and I travel around the world, educating other hairdressers with my education system called Fusion Methodology. I specialize in hair cutting, design, avant-garde, and educating. I believe I built a company/team of extremely talented artists who are passionate and eager to share. I think what sets me apart is my amount of unique experience I’ve been so fortunate to gain through all my travel and that I’m a well-rounded artist that can wear many different creative hats.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Well, I’ve been a soccer fanatic all my life and a lot of my favorite memories as a child were probably playing soccer with all my friends. We managed to play for the same team for about eight years and reach semi-professional. We all grew up together in our teens, and we remain close to this day. Life is all about the amazing relationships we cultivate along the way. I love it!
