Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Khoe.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I made my foray into the entertainment industry after working in the tech corporate world for many years. I owe (and also blame haha) my wonderful and extremely talented husband, Mickey, for inspiring me make the switch. He has been a successful director out here in LA for over ten years and introduced me to the crazy, stupid amazing world of film and storytelling.
I began freelance producing for production companies and clients in LA and after a few years, I met my producing and business partner, Sacha while on an impromptu mini-vacation trip to Mexico (always a fun story!). We immediately gravitated to each other and knew this would be the start to a wonderful friendship and now business partnership together. Cut to a few years later, after working independently for so many years and we created a production company, now known as Antidote.
After spending years behind the camera as a producer and learning the ins and outs of the business, I also fell in love with the art of storytelling from an actor’s perspective. Since I was a child, I have always been a performer at heart and I knew it would only a matter of time before I jump in on the other side of the camera and tell stories in front of the lens…which has always been my first love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While Sacha and I grow our company as well as pursue our own personal dreams and goals (Me: acting / Her: directing) it’s sometimes tricky finding a balance. Between managing classes, auditions, writing scripts, pitches and ongoing productions – I feel extremely blessed to have another powerhouse female on my side. We are able to help and support each other with our personal projects and company productions and I honestly couldn’t do it without her.
Pursing a career in the creative field can definitely feel very isolating at times and you feel like you are doing it all on your own, but I am soooo fortunate to have such a supportive husband and very non-traditional Asian parents who have been so encouraging and my #1 fans through all of the ups and downs – from tears of joy to car cries down the 405, you name it.
Antidote – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Antidote is a female run boutique production services company specializing commercials, music videos, indie films, pilots, and documentaries…and just about anything under the sun that involves filmmaking.
I am a 3rd generation Chinese American (born in Canada) and Sacha is multiracial with Italian-German-British, Mexican-Indigenous Natives of America roots (how cool right?!) We are two passionate creatives who love collaborating with like-minded individuals and especially supporting women and minorities in film!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think it was the first time I was hired on a job outside of Los Angeles, and I thought to myself “how amazing is it that I get to do what I love and get paid to be in another part of the world!”
