Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Alice.
Kathryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I directed a local Los Angeles Crisis Support Team for 6 years. During that time, we noticed the most people coming in suicidal around love issues — dealing with a divorce, cheating, loneliness or other relationship woes.
So I started teaching workshops specializing in love that were jam-packed. Clearly, people needed some help!
My own divorce and failed relationships helped me relate to others who needed some love help. Been there, done that, so I can completely understand what we put ourselves through in love
I was single when I first started specializing in love, so occasionally people would ask: “Well where is YOUR soulmate?!”
I would always reply, “He’s on the way.”
A couple of years later, I met my husband, Jon, using the very process I taught that worked so well for others to find love. We were both single parents, and after marriage, we had 2 more children, bringing our total of boys to 4.
I began teaching in other cities, which led to 9 book publishers in New York wanting my first book. That book, Love Will Find You became a bestseller. A 25 city book tour lead to an international tour (we stopped off on many tropical islands, with a goal to try & see them all), more books and the best part — more and more weddings, babies and romance for people of all ages
We now reside happily in Malibu, are part of the community there, and I continue to write books, help people with love issues and teach workshops. I’ve cut down on traveling to raise our kids, but lead two retreats per year. The last ones were in London and Turks & Caicos. The next one is in Aruba. I tend to teach in a place I’d like to visit.
I’m happy to say I took my business virtual in 2007. Meaning, I help people mainly over Skype or phone and could really live anywhere. When I had to go care for a sick relative, I could just take work with me. We chose to live in Malibu because it’s small & beachy. My husband, Jon, grew up in the Palisades, and Malibu is about the size the Palisades used to be when he was a child.
My wall of weddings is large and growing. I feel so lucky to have helped so many find romance & get over heartbreak. It’s fun to see how many children have resulted from the marriages I’ve had a part in creating
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Juggling motherhood and a burgeoning career has been an interesting journey. I got pregnant celebrating signing my first book deal: LOL! Breaking the pregnancy news to my agent and new publisher was not fun, but they were supportive, and I promised to not let it affect my support of my book.
So, I took the baby on book tour with me. My mother-in-law came with me on the West Coast part of the tour to baby hold, and my mom drove me up and down the East Coast for the Eastern leg. And supportive clients supported me through the mid-West. This was all in February (Valentine’s month), so some states had gnarly weather. I slipped on ice holding the baby in Green Bay – he was okay. And ended up barely going outside the hotel with him for Chicago where they were reporting your face would freeze after 5 minutes outside. That child, our youngest, loves to travel to this day!
Another struggle has been that there’s not exactly a road map for being a love expert. My family, all in traditional jobs, jokes that I pulled a career out of my you-know-what. I’ve reinvented myself a few times along the way. For example, when pregnant with our 3rd, I quit doing in-person sessions and went to phone sessions. My clients were cool with that joking that they got to avoid LA traffic, and I never went back to in-person sessions again.
One last obstacle – the changes in publishing in the last decade – going from the traditional publishing model to ebooks, blogs, and self-publishing. My publisher gave me my first book on Kindle as a birthday gift, and we’ve had to figure out how to balance all of these outlets and make it work. I turned down a recent book deal but will probably do another big publishing deal in the future.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kathryn Alice – what should we know?
I’m known as an expert in soulmates, dating and getting over heartbreak. My first CD came out in 2004, and it was Releasing a Person. It is based on a workshop I taught for years before that. In the first one, people were bawling their eyes out, and we ran out of tissues. I’m most proud of helping people on the brink of despair get over an attachment that has made them miserable.
Practically speaking, I write books and blogs, coach clients with love issues, teach live on-line courses and speak
What sets me apart it that I’m one of the first people to write on soulmates. Publishers wanted me to tone it down and say just “love”, but I stuck to my guns that we get an actual soulmate.
I’m Southern so sayings from my background creep into my work. “There’s a lid for every pot” is from my grandmother. And because I’m an introvert and known for working with introverts, one of my sayings is “If you don’t get out much, he’ll have a wreck in your yard.”
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I could never have become this successful without my husband, Jon. He’s a musician and could see how hard I was working when we first started dating. I would see 10 clients a day and drop into bed with exhaustion. He suggested replicating me by doing CD’s and had a music studio to do so (this was before desktop studios). He produced my first CD’s and also still does all of the music on them and the background for the guided meditations I’m known for.
My agent Stephanie Kip Rostan is a rock star. She understands what I do, even wined & dined me to sign me. This is the agent who repped Gone, Girl, and she knows everyone in publishing. We had a ball meeting with all of the editors. Since I’m a big reader, I was in awe of seeing the bowels of the publishers I grew up reading. She named my first book, led me through the entire publishing process and I call her my “soulmate agent.”
I also have to credit the many clients and students I’ve worked with. They’ve enriched my knowledge of what is needed to dissolve attachment, get over heartbreak, find true love & enter a lasting, solid relationship. They needed me, and without them, I could not have succeeded.
