Meet Dave Pearlman of Pearlman Microphones in Canyon Country

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Pearlman.

Dave, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always was associated with music; that’s all I’ve ever done. Early on (in the 70s) I toured with Dan Fogelberg, Phil Everly, Hoyt Axton, Bobby Womack, and many others. I opened a recording studio in North Hollywood in 1979 and stayed there until 2005 when I decided to open Pearlman Microphones. At first, I was just going to make mics for the studio but more and more of my clients wanted to buy the mics that I was building. After a while, it just made more sense to close the studio and open a mic shop. That was in 2005. Since then I have had many major clients (Including Sir Elton John) use my mics on their recordings. My mics have been used in many major films and television shows as well as commercials (The Voice, etc.).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been smooth all the time. A lot of hard work goes into starting a new business. Vendors must be lined up, and ads must be made. Being the sole proprietor has its downfalls as well; one has to be the manager, the bill payer, the janitor, the actual builder, and shipper. That being said, it’s nice to work alone and listen to music while I make microphones.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pearlman Microphones – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The only thing that I do with Pearlman Microphones is build microphones. The thing that sets me apart from others is that my product is almost completely handmade; one at a time here in Los Angeles. I am known for the kind of quality and personal customer service one can only find in a small business.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now my sights are really just on keeping the product on the market and having new items very soon…
