Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Tieman.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I played competitive softball my entire life and was recruited to play Division One softball at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. There, I majored in Communications and fell in love with all things media. I knew I wanted go to law school at some point, but I also truly enjoyed learning about intercultural communications, social media, and the like.
After college, I returned to Los Angeles to attend Southwestern Law School, one of the most diverse law schools in the nation that also consistently ranks among the Hollywood Reporter’s top entertainment law schools. As a Mexican-American law student and the first lawyer in my family, I sought out the supportive community of the Latino Law Students Association at Southwestern, where I eventually was named president, all while continuing to learn about all aspects of media, entertainment, and business law.
Upon graduation, I worked as an associate attorney in law firms specializing in consumer protection law. However, time and time again, I would find myself assisting friends and acquaintances with their business and entrepreneurial legal needs. Soon after, I decided to open my own practice serving business owners, entrepreneurs, and influencers. I specifically love counseling and advocating for Latina-owned businesses by sharing my own experiences as a fellow Latina business owner. I pride myself on creating a welcoming and educational atmosphere for businesses or entrepreneurs looking to protect their brand(s).
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since I have worked only in law firms (as a legal assistant, law clerk, or an attorney) since 2011, I was never really exposed to things like business development, marketing, strategy, accounting, etc. – all the things that are necessary for running your own business. Being a solo practitioner comes with alot more responsibility, including all of the aforementioned. I am still in the process of learning these different areas and this has been a challenge. But the reward is working with hand-picked clients that I am proud of and also get to celebrate their successes right alongside them – which I wouldn’t trade for anything.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I help my fellow business owners and entrepreneurs make their mark by protecting their brands and businesses. I advocate for and advise Latina-owned businesses by assisting with all areas businesses/brands/entrepreneurs need to pay “legal attention” to, some of which include: business formation and counseling, intellectual property protection, contract drafting and review, podcast legal consulting, website legal compliance, and FTC disclosures. I am most proud of the fact that I am able to educate my community on the true importance of protecting your business and owning it outright. Latinas are some of the most entrepreneurial people on the planet – and it is a joy to be able to assist them and see their businesses flourish. I wanted to make the legal process as painless as possible (and even fun where it can be!) so I have created a space that allows clients or potential clients to educate themselves on legal necessities for their business, and then approach me over social media/email/phone if they have any questions.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ability to truly listen to someone’s needs (as far as their business or brand is concerned) is something that I think sets me apart. People have this idea of lawyers as scummy, or just wanting to take your money. I make it clear to my clients that most of my services are flat-fee – which means that I’m never going to try and just bill you overtime to get paid. I also am very forthcoming with my advice and won’t try to oversell a client. I will let them know that is really important right now, but also if something can wait.
