Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr Cat Meyer.
Dr Cat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
SexLoveYoga was inspired by my own personal journey to reclaim my body and sexual power after experiencing sexual trauma, depression, and eating disorders from a young age into my college years. I discovered yoga at the age of 18 which began my quest to feel good and safe in my body again. Since that first yoga class, I have focused these last 12 years on discovering what were the components to creating freedom of expression and lasting change from the hard-wired conditioning of who we believe we think we ‘should’ be. I have studied with masters in reiki energy work, traditional tantra, meditation, trauma therapy, and received my doctorate in psychology, all with the realization that the work cannot happen solely on the one level, but on all. Today, I am leading successful women’s retreats and workshops, educating my community on how to have the most fulfilling sex and love life through my podcast Eat Play Sex, leading sensual yoga classes in LA and internationally, and finding new ways of igniting positive connection with our bodies.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, especially when you consider the topic of sex being the primary focus. As much as most people will recognize the topic as an important one to have in our society, many continue to shy away from the conversations, want to edit what is said or shown, or not want to do the real work necessary for change. As a society, we are only perpetuating this ideology. The ever-increasing censorship that is occurring across social media platforms has made it difficult to speak as freely and openly as we need. And yet, it’s the real stories of struggles and permission around sexuality that is the antidote to the mis-education, shame, and confusion that we are experiencing.
As I watched my colleagues and friends build their careers around health and wellness, I was noticing a trend of their burnout and exhaustion, and my desire to keep up with them and the world, as well! As an entrepreneur, we have made a commitment to see our companies grow and flourish, often times at the expense of ourselves, and this was exactly what I was seeing occur with myself. Working and pushing my limits of what more I could accomplish and produce ended up causing my body to manifest in health issues and no sexual desire! A powerful experience I was able to transmute into the best lessons for men and women who are the empire-builders and entrepreneurs of the world. How important it truly is to take care of ourselves and how this overflows and impacts every other aspect of our livelihood.
SexLoveYoga – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SexLoveYoga is an online platform for education and programs around sexuality, relationships, and embodiment. While there are many sex educators teaching about techniques in the bedroom, I look at more of the underlying reasons why we may feel stuck, frozen, and disconnected and how to bring ourselves out through understanding the physiology of our body and what is necessary for bringing about the change. I have found the practice of yoga to be a powerful medium through which we can regulate the nervous system, bring internal body awareness, create playfulness, and balance the bodily system to improve the quality of our sex and love lives. Because the programs and information I put out is often inclusive of both the science of our body and the invitation to meditate or self-inquiry, I find that it creates space for people to explore and discover for themselves what it is they could authentically want, rather than blindly adopt someone else’s ideologies.
I am most proud of how far reaching this company has been able to bring these practices and understandings including teaching at retreats on sex and sensuality for women in China.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a result of my own past experiences with being driven by maximum productivity and the burnout of the aftermath, I have come to identify with the notion that success is when we are able to strike the balance of moving forward with one’s goals while maintaining pleasure, play, health, and the lifestyle we desire. I look out for being able to have a consistent growth in my audience size and participation each month, as well as increase of larger-scale events to host talks and classes at, all while maintaining the personal boundaries for the health and wellness of the other aspects of my life.
