Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Raheleh Sarbaziha.
Dr. Sarbaziha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in Integrative Medicine and transforming my medical practice to be more holistic began during my time in residency when I realized that majority of what I was being taught was how to distribute the ‘appropriate’ pharmaceuticals to my patients. Over a three-year residency period, I noticed that most of my patients, in fact, did not get better and gradually over time their conditions worsened. I intuitively understood the basics of nutrition and health but wanted to be able to understand how I could bring disease prevention and optimal living into my medical practice (and in turn, my life). After completing my residency in Internal Medicine, I pursued my fellowship in Integrative Medicine where I acquired tools that allow me to counsel my patients on disease prevention while also connecting the mind, body, and soul. Through the integration of different modalities, I strive to work together with my patients to bring more peace, happiness, and health in their lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
I always had the vision of being a healer and wanted to pursue this by entering medical school; I think it’s fair to say that achieving this goal required times of struggle and even uncertainty.
Where I am today first started with a vision and with hard work, sacrifice and some luck I was able to create an environment where I can provide healing and wellness to my patients, friends, family, and self.
When approaching my career, I never considered my sex as an obstacle or an advantage. I had a vision and just went with it. My biggest piece of advice for young women (or men) who want to start their journey is to find your passion and allow yourself to be fully immersed in it. Doing so will allow you to feel what is right and/or wrong for you and if it belongs to you it will bring peace and happiness.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I did my residency in Internal Medicine then pursued a specialization in Integrative Medicine. My focus is health and beauty from the inside out using the least invasive methods possible. I am proud of my team that I’ve curated over the past few years and how we work together as a family and have created a safe, welcoming and fun environment for patients.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are well positioned for any opportunity they can envision for themselves within North America. I was raised mainly in Canada and have spent most of my adult life in the United States and am familiar with the opportunities women have in both countries. I am also familiar with the lack of opportunities most women have around the world due to societal or governmental regulations. As individuals, we should approach opportunities less with our sex in mind and more with our hearts.
