Meet Matt Fellows of Black Scraps in The Brewery Artist Lofts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Fellows.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I did my first hand poked tattoo in Feb of 2017. A friend had loaned me his machine which I brought home to try my hand at tattooing and that night while eating dinner I thought why have I never tried stick ‘n pokes. I did my first one that night in the kitchen, it was pretty easy and turned out better than most I had seen on friends and other people. The following nights included much of the same, pants off in the kitchen drawing and then tattooing my legs and feet.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not having apprenticed with anybody I had to learn everything through trial and error on brave friends and on myself. It sounds easy enough, grab a needle and some ink and start stabbing away, but there’s a ton of little steps and intricacies and techniques that make or break a tattoo. There were a handful of how-to videos out there but most are shit and include using household items to tattoo with which is never a good idea.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
All my tattoos are done without electricity one poke at a time. And they’re my own drawings, I never tattoo anyone else’s designs nor do I do the same design twice, unless we’re doing bff or couples tats.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve worked for everything I’ve created without any luck or hype, I do however feel super lucky to have so much trust from so many people, makes me happy.
