Meet Agnes Baddoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnes Baddoo.

Inspired by simple forms with function and an interest in genuine craft and techniques, designer and stylist Agnes Baddoo creates leather goods that are well made and classic. Most notably the original Sac 1, a structured, vegetable tanned leather tote, distinct in its style, merging soft and hard lines. The materials in the collection are carefully selected and uniquely composed. The shapes are designed for everyday use and adapt to our evolving environment. Based in Los Angeles and New York City, all leather goods are handmade by a small local production house using the most exacting attention to detail, resulting in timeless pieces with life-long value.

“After studying painting and printmaking, she had the gumption to apply to 10 out of reach “dream jobs” (in order to fund her real dream of making art in Paris), only to actually got hired at one in the art department at Elle. (“The last office job I ever had but by far the best office job I ever had.”) Her experience at the magazine springboarded her into decades as an in-demand stylist on both coasts, a job that gave Agnes plenty of practice in making something out of nothing and turning a no into a yes. Later this would translate into running her own brands: first making aromatherapy atmosphere sprays, and then her bags, the original batch of which sold out in hours at L.A.’s Echo Park Craft Fair.” – Apiece Apart Woman

Has it been a smooth road?
After years of employment in the “collaborative sector”, being a sole proprietor means you only have to agree with yourself, can seek out good counsel from/share references with your peers. That said, there is still a gazillion moving parts so staying flexible to redirect is a plus. The road is not always smooth but if its’ meant to be, there will always be a way.

What else should our readers know?
Agnes Baddoo is a luxury leather goods brand specializing in timeless classics you’ll return to for a lifetime and keep in rotation. Structured totes with no hardware, Sac 1 and Sac 2, especially in Veggie Tan, are perennial classics. The Belt sac is a current fav. Made locally, in Hollywood, it is very important to the brand that we manufacture well designed useful keepsake leather goods, contribute to providing a living wage, support an elusive handcraft – where we pay taxes!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the abundance of nature with an urban/metropolis backbone. I love discovering old neighborhoods, parks, stores, restaurants, and markets. It used to be rare, unsafe even, to see people walking on the streets. I love that more and more neighborhoods have focal points of interest that support foot traffic to local businesses so there’s more to discover at eye level. Traffic, parking, and air/water pollution could always be improved.

Pricing:

  • Sac 1 Natural $475
  • Sac 2 Natural $650
  • Sac 2 White $825
  • Belt Sac Chocolate $350
