Meet Diane Song

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Song.

Diane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, I wanted to always be a judge or an artist. I don’t know why because those are two completely different career paths but a kid knew what she wanted. I never really thrived or particularly enjoyed school so naturally, art became the career path for me. Because I already knew I wanted to go to art school as a Fine Art major, I felt like I was wasting my time in high school. So, I got my GED, dropped out of high school, and applied to Otis College of Art and Design.

When I was preparing my application for Otis, I knew they had a teaching credential program and seeing that I always had an interest in working with kids through past summer jobs like a camp counselor at Tom Sawyer Camps, teaching peaked my interest so I enrolled in the Teaching Credential Program as well.

During my time at Otis, my art evolved greatly from only knowing how to paint representative work to primarily only working in abstract forms. I primarily work in ceramics, fibers, and paint focusing on composition and color. Instead of focusing on creating a set image, I like to focus on different colors that bring out different emotions whether that be backed up psychologically or personally. I’m going to attend USC for a M.A.T this Fall while still continuing to make work in fibers, ceramic, and painting.

Has it been a smooth road?
I mean up to a certain point yeah. I always knew I wanted to do art so that part of it was a pretty clear path and it was easy in terms of knowing direction when I was entering the art world. I struggled a lot with knowing what kind of art I wanted to make. Being stylized isn’t something that is encouraged but I felt the pressure to make work that was consistent of each other and getting to the point of knowing what kind of work I wanted to make was a huge struggle as a whole.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Diane Song Art – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I make work + teach. Spreading new ways to make art and different learning techniques and approaches for people who gravitates towards a certain method of learning is something I strive to do when teaching and making art. I think that’s what my whole business/company is. It’s myself really. My ‘business goal’ is to spread accessible ways to learn art and make art. I want to teach art while making art and make art while teaching art.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Los Angeles. I lived here my whole life and the city is so full. It has everything a city needs. The ocean, desert, woods, snow, city life, art, and food. The only downside of living in LA has got to be the traffic but no surprise there. You gotta expect one vice when you live in a city full of positives.
