Meet Dr. Jill Javahery of El Segundo Dermatology & Comprehensive Dermatology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jill Javahery.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a physician. As I was going through medical school, I realized that dermatology offered everything I wanted to do. I could work with adults, kids, do surgery and offer preventative and cosmetic care. I did my residency in New York and then moved to California to marry my husband. When I got here, I joined a large group practice in Long Beach. I enjoyed working there, but after about four years, I was ready for something new. I wanted to do more than just work as a physician. I wanted to create my own brand and to be able to control all of the details of the practice from hiring employees that shared my philosophy regarding how to best care for patients to purchasing all the devices that I enjoy using to creating a product line for skin care. With that in mind, I opened my practice at Comprehensive Dermatology of Long Beach. The response to the new practice was amazing & the practice still continues to grow today. More recently, I have partnered with other wonderful dermatologists who each own their own practices and together opened our collaborative practice at El Segundo Dermatology. Each of us brought different strengths to the table, and we knew we were better together than we were apart. Now I treat patients at both Comprehensive Dermatology of Long Beach and El Segundo Dermatology.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of the main struggles I faced when opening my own practice was the fact that I was trained as a physician, not a business owner! I had to teach myself the ins and outs of owning my own business – Everything from getting a business license to finding an office space to building the practice. It was a whole different education, but I learned that I love the business side of things as well. One thing was not a struggle was a patient response – Our practice has been busy since it’s inception and for that, I am very grateful.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the El Segundo Dermatology & Comprehensive Dermatology of Long Beach story. Tell us more about the business.
Both Comprehensive Dermatology of Long Beach and El Segundo Dermatology are full-service practices and offer expertise in all areas of dermatology. What sets us apart is that we really know our patients – We treat entire families and watch children grow into adults and then bring in children of their own for care. When a patient comes to visit us, it’s like visiting family or friends. Our patients know that we care about them, and will always take care of them.

Once when my kids had the day off from school, I decided to stay home from work to spend time with them. I woke them up and told them I wasn’t going into work, and that we were all going to go to Disneyland together. I asked my son if he was excited, and he replied, “Yes, I’m excited, but what are all of the patients with skin cancer going to do today?” That moment, and knowing that my son understands my job, was an amazing moment for me. He knows that when his mom is away from her family, it’s because she’s taking care of patients and helping other people in need. Realizing that he’s proud of me, and knows that my job is important, was an incredibly proud moment for me.
