Today we’d like to introduce you to Noriko Roy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Noriko. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
In 2012, I was ready and fully committed to a career in medicine. Then woke up one morning with an intense feeling in my gut telling me that I was going in the wrong direction. I thought about it a moment and realized – there’s no better time than now to pursue something I had always wanted to do – Fashion School. During my first quarter at FIDM, I jumped into a public relations internship with a firm specializing in luxury brands, goods, and services.
After graduating, I began working with an international marketing and communications company catering to private clubs and luxury resorts – managing marketing and advertising efforts, while simultaneously managing Membership and Events for an organization of luxury brand Marketing and Sales executives throughout Southern California.
After a little over a year, I decided to focus my efforts in Los Angeles, and began working with an experiential event company, while directing sales and marketing efforts for a 3D Virtual Reality startup, while managing strategic partnerships for a luxury jeweler, while helping to launch an aesthetic medical platform. It was definitely one of the most exhausting, and rewarding times of my life as it gave me a sense of direction.
In 2016, I partnered with Kristy Adcock – who I had initially met at FIDM and then reconnected while working with a mutual client in Beverly Hills. Kristy’s passion, experience, and creative genius complimented my entrepreneurial spirit all too well. We realized how cohesively we worked together and decided to take the plunge and build something together. We started by launching our own brand of raisins… Ha – long story, short – this experience brought us to the realization that our natural talents shine when we’re working together as a team. Two is always better than one, right?
This resulted in the formation of NK Agency.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not a smooth road at all. I felt like I had NO idea what I was doing most of the time, and had no idea if I was taking my career in the right direction or if I had just made an incredibly stupid and impulsive decision. I can honestly say that I followed my intuition and just did what felt right – which was, and still is, absolutely terrifying at times. Working as a contractor, you never experience “stability”, and you realize that if you don’t have the drive and discipline to continue building and growing – things probably aren’t going to work out the way you had envisioned.
Many projects that I had worked on failed. Several connections that I made and believed in let me down (not all of them – some ended up changing my life in the best possible way). And I was reassured over and over that life will throw every hurdle imaginable at you when you least expect it. At the same time, all these factors also have contributed (in a positive way) to where I am today.
Please tell us about NK Agency.
NK is a 360 international marketing agency. So we do everything from brand development, creative marketing, experiential marketing, influencer management, digital advertising, etc. Our current specialty is definitely social media marketing & advertising, content creation, and strategy & partnerships – within beauty, food and beverage, health and wellness, and fine jewelry.
We love that 90% of the business we have acquired has been purely referral based. Referrals from past clients, current clients, and other industry professionals. When it comes to social media – we stay very up to date on back-end growth strategies, content direction, industry trends, and various other key factors involved with successfully growing a social media presence.
We do our best to ensure our clients never fall behind, but rather set the tone for others in that respective industry. Our ability to grow social media accounts through the content we produce and the engagement strategy we implement has been something that we are very pleased with. We also expanded internationally at the beginning of 2018, which was also very exciting!
What sets us apart is our company culture. Kristy and I have definitely set a standard for those who are interested in joining our team. We have always gone above and beyond for our clients. No matter what time of day, or day of the week – we do our best to make ourselves available. We truly care about the success, and continued success of each of our clients and will do all that we can to contribute to that success.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would have to say traveling. Starting with weekends away with my dad to visit my grandparents in Santa Monica. I grew up in Bakersfield, and there really isn’t much to do there. So a couple times a month we would pop down to Santa Monica, go shopping at the promenade, eat at our favorite spots around town and wander around aimlessly to see what we’d stumble upon. My mom would take us to New York/New Jersey to visit her sister, and I remember falling in love with the energy of the city. The first time I went to Japan I was ten – and I remember how vastly different the culture was. I spent a month there and came back realizing that there was more than just one “way of being”. Having the opportunity to experience different lifestyles on a consistent basis was very impactful.
