Meet Rebecca Momo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Momo.

Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started when I was four. I was fascinated by theatre, and not only my parents took me to see plays, but also I used to make my parents and my older brother sit in the living room and watch my puppet shows (I had a little table that I flipped, and it became my theatre). My passion for creating plays and performances never stopped, all birthday parties were excuses to gather cousins or friends to perform something for the adults. The audience was very important, always (laughs).

After that, I started taking acting classes (when I was six) and never stopped. If I ever told six-year-old Rebecca that she would be in Hollywood acting, she would go nuts. Oh, I forgot to mention I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, so living in LA was definitely a dream! I came to LA four years ago and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the New York Film Academy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. (laughs). The language was my first obstacle. I was raised in Portuguese, and all my acting experience was also in Portuguese, from when I was six until the age of eighteen. So learning how to act in English was certainly a challenge, it took me a while to connect my emotions to a language that wasn’t my mother tongue.

Also, in LA there are so many actors, everyone is an actor, so it’s important to stand out. Being a foreigner makes things harder. Like I said, I grew up in São Paulo, where I knew people in the industry. I knew what I needed to do, where to go, who to talk to. Networking is very important, but I lived my whole life there.

When I moved to LA I didn’t know one single person, didn’t know who to trust and where to go, it wasn’t easy. But we learn with time, and now I feel like it’s the other way around, I don’t know much more about São Paulo, and LA became my home.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m an actress, writer, and producer. I had the honor to produce some short films and web series pilots as well as my own movie that I wrote. Note to Say was a movie that I wrote inspired on a relationship I had, it was made with all my heart, and in the end, it gave me many awards. I’m very proud of it.

In Brazil, I grew up in theatre, so I participated in many play productions, and my favorite is one that I got to play a man. It was hilarious, I had a lot of fun with it.

Here in LA, I got the chance to act in Music Videos and different shorts. My next plan is to be part of a sitcom, for me, it combines the best of both worlds: you have the live audience of the theatre and the cameras of the movies. Plus, I love making people laugh.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Work ethic and respect. I know it sounds obvious, but I feel like a lot of people constantly forget about that. Actors sometimes feel like they’re more important than anyone else on set and forget that everyone there is the same and should be respected.

My work ethic is very important for me, to always be early (I had an instructor who always said: “Early is on time, on time is late!), professional and pleasant.

If someone that was on set with me tells about my work to someone else, I accomplished what I wanted. When someone asks to work with me again or recommend me to another job, it makes my day.
