Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Avery.
Zach, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always had a passion for acting but did not professionally start pursuing it until after I graduated college with a degree in Psychology and started a doctoral program in Psychology in Chicago. I was sitting in class and had a massive epiphany that I was not supposed to be in school for the next six years and I needed to follow my heart and pursue my passion for the arts rather than what I was being told was the “correct” path.
My girlfriend at the time (and now wife) Mallory and I packed up our car two months later and drove across country from Chicago to LA with a few bags and our dog, Lucy. We moved out to Los Angeles in January of 2012, and the only person that we knew was my mom’s best friends daughter.
She was nice to enough to take us to dinner one night and ended up introducing me to Julio and Diego Hallivis (producer and director duo) who were casting a short film that they were about to shoot. I ended up going in for the casting session… booked the gig and from that moment forward I have been doing what I absolutely love as much as possible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think when you are pursuing a career such as acting, it is never an extremely smooth road but certainly, a road that pushes you further in the right direction at every roadblock. For me personally, every single job that I have been hired on has come through personal connections made either on prior sets, in meetings or at other auditions. So the road to establishing all of these connections has been a long and marathon-like process rather than a sprint.
Also, the nature of acting is that you must be hired in order to do your job so this was something that I struggled with along the way. People who pursue a career in the arts are usually extremely passionate by nature; I certainly am. So when you have all of that creativity inside of you and nowhere to direct it when you are in between jobs… it can be challenging.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood has to be all the games and sports that my childhood best friend, Bruce, and I would constantly play outside. Every single second of free time we had would be spent outside playing soccer, basketball, street hockey, throwing the football or even made up games that we would invent and become obsessed with for a few weeks. We lived down the street from one another from the time we were two years old, and it was truly a blessing to have such a good friend and so many memories that will last a lifetime.
