Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Woolner.
Claire, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in LA but wanted to escape. So I went to upstate New York and made sculptures and videos in a big warehouse and smoked a lot of cigarettes. Somehow I ended up back in my hometown but got dropped into a community of amazing strangers–I was making music, sculpture, video, and then realized I was just a weirdo who is in love with mystery and almost everyone. Now I’m doing a lot of performance, putting myself in as creatively uncomfortable situations as possible, trying not to make any judgments and that seems to be the best way I’ve found so far. Thankfully I don’t smoke cigarettes anymore either, but I do wish they weren’t bad for you because they are such good reasons to sit down and look at the sky.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make sculptures, songs, poems, but mostly these days I’m on my feet searching for the space between the profane and the sacred and trying to get as intimate with everyone and everything as I can. I want to be in the space between all thought and use my work to travel there as best I can.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Find a community. But don’t worry too hard about how to find it. Trust that you’ll find it and keep following the stuff that lights you up. That’s how I found mine, and when I’m at my best, the navigation system I use is to go where the love is.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
clairewoolner.com has a sprinkling of my video + film work as well as visual art. I perform twice a month with Wet The Hippo’s “The Murge” – a totally insane and hilarious and sad playground which you can come witness every 2nd Sunday at 9:30 at The Clubhouse in Los Feliz, and our newest show “After Hours” which is the 4th Saturday of every month at 10 pm at The Lyric Hyperion Theater. Also, have a look at @wom.now to catch “WOM,” a show I co-wrote and perform in with three genius fellow wom–we’re performing all around the states in the next couple months, with a run at Junior High Gallery in Hollywood mid-may. IMDB will show you where you can see my film work and keep an eye out for Mike Cuenca’s “I’ll Be Around”–a new feature where I got to play a wasted mess named Claudia.
@clairewoolner is my Instagram, and that’s where I sometimes remember to post things I’m working on.
