Today we’d like to introduce you to Eser Tozum.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up bilingual in Dutch and Turkish in the heart of Amsterdam in Holland. Since I was a small girl, I had a huge passion for learning languages. I believe in once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that can change your life if you have the courage to say “yes.”
At the age of 24, I had learned eight languages, and one day I got a call from London. I was asked to interpret in Italian/Dutch at the Champions League press conference of soccer teams PSV and AC Milan. I had just learned Italian, and I didn’t know anything about soccer. I wanted to say “no” but accidentally said “yes.” That changed my professional career forever. “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
That’s how my interpreting career took off. I traveled to Brazil and learned Portuguese as a 9th language. I decided to turn my love for languages into a career and learned the profession of simultaneous interpreting. My profession has allowed me to function as a bridge for people to communicate. I love to help connect people through language, whether it’s prime ministers of countries, multinational companies, soccer clubs or entrepreneurs.
As a conference interpreter, I have worked internationally at summits and conferences of organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations. I have traveled the world from Africa to Australia. I had the privilege to work with prime ministers of countries such as Germany, Turkey, and Holland.
Another life-changing opportunity came in 2011 when I had moved to Istanbul. The biggest late night show of the country, “Beyaz Show” (which I used to be a fan of) wanted to have me on the show to assist the famous host in interviewing celebrities in multiple languages. Again I wasn’t sure if this was for me, but I said “yes” anyway.
I’ve been on the live show for seven years and got a huge following because of my knowledge of nine languages on live national television. I got invited to prestigious universities to give lectures throughout the country, and a dream came true when I became a published author. My book about the art of learning languages was sold out in three days. While I was interpreting at various conferences, I was also hired as a presenter at international summits and tv shows.
Currently, I’m working on a tv show in the US, and while I continue my interpreting career, I coach people in learning languages. I share my methods on how I learned nine languages, and I guide them with practical tips to develop their language skills. I am convinced that everyone can learn a new language. The trick is to apply the right techniques and has a high dosage of motivation! In today’s globalized world, we need to distinguish ourselves on the competitive market.
Even if someone speaks two languages, this is not sufficient in nowadays world. My blog Eser’s World (www.esersworld.com) provides simple and effective techniques on learning a new language. Languages are the gateway to a new world. I feel blessed to guide people to explore that new world and enjoy the benefits of mastering a language professionally.
Has it been a smooth road?
Choosing the path of becoming self-employed and building a portfolio of long-term clients has been a challenging journey. Being an entrepreneur requires a lot of faith, hard work, patience, and perseverance. Despite the obstacles and setbacks, it’s always worth the effort to follow your heart and your calling. I believe that each one of us holds gifts and unique talents that are meant to give back to the world.
Once you discover your gift through finding your passion, the universe gives you unexpected opportunities to try things out. What excites you the most? What fuels you and fills your heart with joy and excitement? Find what gives you energy and follow that path. I advise people to grasp the opportunity and take action. The rest will follow.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started my blog Eser’s World to share my experience in learning new languages. I provide online language coaching to people who are either learning a new language or for those who want to improve their current language skills. My coaching includes a customized language program for each person, designed to elevate their language skills and create strong fundamental knowledge of the language backed up with a lot of practice.
I created my own methodology on learning languages in a simple, yet very effective way. If this has worked for learning my nine languages, it can work for anyone who’s decisive to add another language to their basket of talents. I feel grateful to be able to add value and inspire others to find the best in themselves and bring this to light. For more information, please contact me on www.esersworld.com.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Language is the tool that allows us to express ourselves, to elevate businesses and connect with others around the world. There’s no place in the world where language is not needed. Los Angeles is a multi-cultural hub where people from all over the world come together.
I would definitely recommend people to start out here, also because there’s a huge bilingual community in California. At the same time, technological innovations are moving so fast that it doesn’t matter anymore where you are geographically. You can translate where ever you are on the globe.
