Today we’d like to introduce you to Elissa Kravetz.
Sun Child was created in September 2015 by fashion publicist Elissa Kravetz.
A passion for travel brought Elissa on a trip throughout Asia and while on a yoga retreat in Goa, she met a family who sources vintage and new silk saris. Elissa’s desire to help this family paired with her passion for fashion led to a working relationship nearly immediately. Within six months, Elissa returned to Goa. Not even a monsoon could stop her from creating 100 dresses with the family.
With her suitcase filled, she flew back to the states to sell to her friends and family. With the dresses selling faster than Elissa could have ever imagined and the demand for more daily, Sun Child was born. She returned to India, creating her next collection.
Adding on to her original style of one-of-a-kind dresses, Elissa expanded into jackets, jumpsuits, pants and tank tops. The current collection has six key bodies in a variety of prints and colors, with no two pieces being alike.
Sun Child provides jobs to people throughout a small village in Goa, employing individual artisans rather than large factories. Each silk is blessed, hand-sewn and curated with love.
A cabin nestled deep in the woods of Topanga Canyon is home for Sun Child where Elissa invites clients to join her in the showroom for an experience that consists of silks, sipping of teas and sometimes the occasional Indian food feast. For those not fortunate enough to make the visit to the West Coast showroom, Elissa conducts virtual FaceTime shopping appointments with women around the globe.
The Sun Child collection is available in specialty boutiques including Roseark, Principessa and Gjusta Goods in Los Angeles and Warm in New York City as well as available on the e-ecommerce site www.iamsunchild.com.
Sun Child donates to several animal rescues including Animal Hope & Wellness in Los Angeles and WAG in Goa.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been paved with ups and downs and moments of intense fear and joy. Sun Child began out of a deep desire to help a family in India. Elissa flew there during the monsoon, stayed in North Goa for a week, rode through the jungle on the back of a motorbike to work every day in the pouring rain, got lice, worked deliriously jet-lagged, and tirelessly to create the first collection in 2015.
She sold dresses out of her backyard garden in Venice. With one rolling rack in her little kitchen and would send dresses to stores in hopes, they would sell her pieces. That first year she brought a dress with her everywhere she went. It took a lot of hard work and dedication.
As of recent, the brand has experienced a fierce momentum of growth. But faced with a health scare, Elissa realized how important it is to slow down and take care of yourself. Currently, she is taking time to reset and align and has handed the reigns over to her team, trusting in the process, allowing them to.help move the mission and the brand forward.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Elissa created Sun Child, a brand empowering women to feel beautiful. This fashion line of key styles created from a vast variety of vintage and new silk saris. She sources the fabrics from South India, and everything is made there, not from large factories, rather from small artisans in and around the village where she works. She travels to Goa twice a year to create, giving back while she’s there to WAG, the local animal rescue.
The flagship showroom is in Topanga Canyon, and several times a week it is open for private appointments. Women come from all over CA for the experience of the silks. The dresses are one size fits all. Almost every woman who tries on a dress looks in the mirror, smiles, puts her arms out and spins around. After three years now it still amazes her and reminds her exactly why she’s doing this. There is a section on Sun Child’s Instagram called “Queens” highlighting the many different women wearing the silks.
“I’m proud I created a brand and that I am able to share the beautiful clothing with women around the world. Each time I travel to India I shop for a family who can’t afford food. I buy them groceries to last for six months, I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m ‘proud’ of this, but it sure does make my heart feel huge.”
