Life and Work with Lynnette Astaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynnette Astaire.

Originally from a town of 500 and raised in Chicago, Lynnette started her first food company at age 11, selling to her classmates and teachers after becoming fed up with the school lunch. During college, she gained restaurant experience while working in various positions in NYC, delved deeper into wellness and adopted the practice of fasting. From there she moved to Oaxaca, Mexico where she managed a kitchen and currently hosts fasting retreats. She now spends most of her time in Los Angeles developing the Superfood School brand.

Lynnette’s past career in the arts, her no-nonsense perspective on wellness plus her healing of personal illness through diet makes her a creative, authentic and inspiring figure for all who work with her. Unlike restaurant chefs who’s success relies on the secrecy of their recipes and vegan chefs committed to converting, Lynnette openly shares her “predominantly plant-based” lifestyle and has created Superfood School as a channel to help people get more plants on their plates, no matter their diet.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve moved around a lot and my biggest piece of advice is not thinking that a location is going to change who you are, it’s just like a relationship, as soon as you get comfortable the mask comes off and once again, here you are. The road is smooth sometimes and other times rough, I think getting realistic about what your strengths and weaknesses are ASAP is great so that you know exactly how and why to ask for help.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in helping get more plants on peoples plates no matter their diet through my company Superfood School. What sets me apart is my authenticity and most importantly, my transparency about my flexitarian diet while being a 100% plant-based chef. The dogma is that there is no dogma. At the end of the day, most people are looking for plant-based options that are workable for them but not necessarily a conversion, so my “plant-based chef, occasional carnivore approach is very attractive to most.

Who have you been inspired by?
Lisa Left Eye Lopez from the group TLC inspired me to start fasting, a practice that I have done for over 10 years now and over 30 times. I’m also inspired by my mom, who beat cancer twice.
