Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Hsieh-Hornstra.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Melody. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I came to America as a young teenager who knew only a dozen or so English words. I began my first company in 2000 with family money and sold scooters, but after six years, sales plummeted, and I decided to return to school.
After obtaining my MBA at USC’s Marshall School of Business, I re-launched Asa Products in late 2006 with a brand new product line – Mobo Cruisers – a line of three-wheeled cruisers for kids and adults. This time I applied what I learned in school about marketing, operations, and research before I launched the brand.
Today, Mobo Cruisers is sold online and at various retail stores in the US and has expanded into Canada. Since the company started, the company has experienced a great amount of sales increase, and I’ve been able to successfully broker licensing deals with companies such as Disney.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. When I launched my first company in 2000, it was an incredible success, but I did not have a long term plan, nor was I concentrated on building a brand. Ultimately I closed that business, went back to school and reapplied what I learned and launched Mobo Cruisers. This time I developed a solid business plan with long term goals and business has been solid for more than a decade.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Asa Products and Mobo Cruiser – what should we know?
I’ve been driven to develop a brand that would encourage a fit and fun lifestyle for all ages and create a family fun experience for all. Today, Asa is globally recognized with satellite offices in Taiwan, China, and Germany. Asa has used the wisdom and experience gained in its success in business and its commitment to build strategic alliances, strong brand recognition and substantial goodwill with consumers.
